All,

One of my favorite books is _The Last Dancer_ by _Daniel Keys Moran_. The plot involves two people who are essentially immortal (not to mention time-hopping) continuing a fight of over the centuries and shaping humanity in the process.

I recently re-read the _The Last Dancer_ and feel to read more stories like that. Mentions or recommendations will be welcome.

Regards

Maybe Zelazny's _This Immortal_ (aka _And Call Me Conrad_)?

And of course lots of stuff with Angels/Demons/God/Satan/gods etc.

Jack L. Chalker's _A Jungle of Stars_ I don't remember
clearly, but I think it has something like this. Probably
it is also (early) Chalker in ways I don't remember clearly.
Maybe you can take it. Maybe you can't.

Most encounters of "Doctor Who" and "The Master",
though it's "The Master" regularly trying to take over
Earth - or elsewhere - and The Doctor stopping him
or, now and again, her.

Quite a few stories - I think - where a long lived alien
stranded on Earth steers human society towards
creating enough of a space programme so that the
alien can use it to escape. That's Doctor Who again
when he was sentenced to Earth, I think James White
did it in a short story, and Arthur C. Clarke gave us
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Possessed_(short_story)>.

Also consider Donald R. Bensen, _And Having Writ_
<https://jamesdavisnicoll.com/review/things-i-once-enjoyed>
(nods in the broad direction of Canada)

Thanks. I read this in my late teens. I had quite forgotten. It would take a re-read. Thanks.

I read three of the five. I will schedule the other two on Audible subscription if they have it. if not, I'll use my Kindle subscription. I found that Amazon did well by _Altered Carbon_. I liked it best of all of the Takeshi Kovac series. And I liked _The Old Man's War_ the best of that series too.

Thanks!

The phrase "sentenced to earth" remined me of a movie I saw in which someone foreign (an Australian?) was sentenced to live in New York. I have worked in NYC and I could relate to that. :-)

warning, warning, warning! Weber tends to have problems with biology (and
physics...) but this series was the poster child for bad biology (and worse
physics) as it postulated that humans were really aliens, unrelated to any
other species on Earth. Including the other hominids, such as chimps,
bonobos, and gorillas. Hint: we’re pretty damn closely related to all
three. (As for the physics... the Moon is an alien battleship. Really. And
the good guys later collect a whole bunch of similarly sized alien
battleships, and build some themselves, so economics is something else that
Weber has problems with.) Further to the... interesting... biology, another
set of aliens (the bad guys) have sufficient iron in their skeletons to be
affected by magnetic fields, and no, they’re not cyborgs. Hmm. The possible
problems involving that much iron moving anywhere near a natural magnetic
field (on a planetary surface, for example) is left as an exercise for the
student. And then there’s the drive system which, when properly employed,
can cause stars to explode. (On purpose, you have to go to a lot of trouble
to get the Big Boom, it’s not like a certain other story where the ftl
drive causes stars to explode when coming out of handwave space. And when
going into handwave space. Oops.)

It could be worse. Stirling and McCaffery had a hominid subspecies which was
sufficiently rad-hard (they lived on a high-gravity planet which had lots and
lots and lots of heavy metals, such as uranium, and, apparently, naturally
occuring plutonium...) that they _built nuke bombs by hand_ and didn’t die
of either the radiation or heavy metal poisoning. And yet they were still
sufficiently closely related to humans that they could impregnate humans. (As
they were really nasty uberbadguys, even for Buckets of Blood Stirling, three
guesses how _that_ happened. (My fav line: “He’s the bad pirate, I’m
the worse pirate” just before he proves his point by raping female protag
#1. Remember, high-gee planet subspecies, so are very strong... those who
didn’t die of heart problems, that is. More bad biology.)

more really bad Weber biology. And time travel. And a ‘fighter’
spacecraft which masses 10,000 tons, revealing truly bad economics. (How in
Christ Jesus’s name can anyone, even an interstellar federation, afford to
build ’thousands’ of those things?)

Hey, it worked for Niven in Known Space!

If there is a problem it would be with Google Groups. An extremely bad
Usenet interface and I recommend getting a newsreader and a usenet feed
rather than relying on them. There are a number of free and very cheap

Perhaps Wollffan is thinking of an early Randall Garrett short story,
"Time Fuze", published in 1954.

It is not unusual for me to like the first book of a series the best and
the rest of the books slowly decline in quality. I do not know if it is
the newness of the story or that the author is struggling to add more to
the story.

Oh my goodness, here we go again. Any book / story with FTL in it has
handwavium in it. Period. Get over it.

And Mutineer's Moon has a million planetoid (2,000 km to 3,000 km
diameter) sized spaceships in it to defend themselves against an
invasive species with very high iron blood. But the 5,000 inhabited
planets could not build the million planetoids, even over several
thousand years. Handwavium. Get over it.

It is mostly the latter. They have a good story to tell, and tell
it successfully, and the publisher, having less than zero creative
talent, wants more of what sold, they the author is induced to
write the same good story over and over and over and over until the
grease spot on the sidewalk that used to be a horse doesn't make
mony any more. It's more obvious with TV shows, but it happens with
book series, as well. It's a rare author who has the ability to
escape from the cycle.

that’s the one. Our Heros depart Sol System for Alpha Centauri. On arrival,
the nearest of the binary/trianary stars has gone nova. Which should NOT have
happened. Our Heroes work out that their drive caused it. They convert their
ftl ship to stl (somehow) and head back to Sol. Part way there they detect
that Sol has gone nova. Oops.

more bad biology. A lot of ‘hard’ SF has bad biology. Ben Bova had an
editorial in Analog about that.

If one leaves out the time-hopping, and the shaping of humanity... there is one
_obvious_ possible suggestion, but it's a movie, and not a book. So obvious as
to be trite.

So I'm not surprised that no one else in this thread has mentioned "Highlander"!
(Actually, I was surprised a bit that your initial post didn't mention Highlander as
an example of what you were _not_ looking for.)

Of course, one big problem here is that stories which share the same premise
are not necessarily similar in other ways. So what you liked in _The Last
