Now, what Aragorn SHOULD have said was, "No, we learned of your
sad fate long ago, and since then we have discouraged our
womenfolk from going into battle."

Only Aragorn wouldn't say that, having both Luthien and Elwing on
his family tree.

And Randal should've had only two hobbits in the party, and
Aragorn shouldn't have whiskers. (JRRT said in a letter
somewhere, "The Dunedain were beardless, a sign of their Elvish
blood.")

But at times even the good Homer nods.

I'm wondering how Treebeard confidently identifies
all of the multi-species party as non-female.
Especially the chick with the bow. :-)

Re: Bechdel test

I never saw Jackson's third film, having been disgusted by his
treatment of Faramir and Aragorn in his second. But in the
*book,* Galadriel accompanies Elrond's party bringing Arwen to
Minas Tirith. JRRT doesn't give them any dialogue, being focused
on Frodo's reaction.

In the Discworld books, the Dwarfs all have beards and in the early works it's near impossible to tell male from female, even among themselves. Some of the female city Dwarfs, notably Cheery Littlebottom, started wearing more feminine clothing.

The Entwives didn't die in battle. They were literally lost. Here's a
question. Is Goldberry an entwife?

Am I the only one who noticed the hobbits referred to a mysterious wood no one goes to, and I thought it should be checked for entwives?

She's the River's daughter. Her element is Water, not Wood. If
you can get hold of a copy of _The Songs of Tom Bombadil,_
there's a ballad describing her marriage-by-capture to Tom, with
which she appears to be perfectly contented.

Is it named? Your phrasing seems to refer to the Old Forest, to
which the Bucklanders go when it suits them.

Now in the *game* _Lord of the Rings Online_ (which celebrates
its fifteenth anniversary today), north of Overhill there's a
spider-infested grove called Bindbole Wood, where a low-level
character gets to rescue an Ent* from a tangle of cobwebs. But
that was a creation of Turbine, now Standing Stone Games.
Although there is that pub talk of how Sam's cousin saw a tree
walking on the North Moors. But it is dismissed by all the
pubcrawlers.

_____
*Or an Entwife, or possibly a Huorn. They all look pretty much
alike.
