When I was a young engineer in the early 80s at Megacorp, I was on a new project that had many new hires. We'd frequently scope out "all you can eat" places and have a big lunch. One was called "Duff's" and was just like that first cartoon. They charged $3.10 at the door.

There was a large revolving carousel of food items that you'd belly up to and grab stuff onto your plate with utensils as it rotated past your little stall. Newbies would sometimes take too long and the Wheel O' Food would spin whatever they were loading too far away and they'd be stuck holding a dipper or tongs or whatever waiting on that dish to come back.

This place was very popular with senior citizens, many who seemed to wear long overcoats regardless of the weather. I suspect many rolls and pieces of fried chicken found their way into the big pockets of those coats.

But usually we'd hit the Pizza Inn buffet and battle the students from my alma mater for the choice pie slices. Good times.
