Another movie review that might be of some interest, a review of The Last Child, following up my review/ rant on ZPG a while back. One more thing that irritates me that I didn't work in, the biggest factors in the population spike in the 1950s and 1960s were the post WW2 "Baby Boom" and reduced infant mortality, the latter driven by vaccination. A real question, was anyone in sci fi really talking about overpopulation after the 1970s?

Absolutely they were and probably still are. Ben Bova, for example, had a couple
of later books in which women's incessent need to crank out endless babies was
a plot point: Titan, where reconciling the limited habitat space with any
baby boom was difficult at best, and The Return, in which a secret fertility
limited is installed in every woman without their knowledge or consent.

I have been thinking for a while that an interesting biohack would be
to find a way to make fertility dependent on population density (I was
thinking perhaps something pheromone-driven) with people living in the
areas with the highest population density having the lowest fertility.
Note that I am not proposing that this be imposed on our society, I'm
just mentioning it as a notion that I find interesting.

Your sensitivity to sexism in science fiction no doubt does you credit.

That evolution has given women a tendency to want children, though,
given that they're stuck with the hard work of caring for them, should be
unsurprising. If they didn't, the next generation would not survive.

It's not as if men don't also have needs that threaten the planet's survival.

Their need to dominate other men has led to wars, which aren't good
for the environment as well as for people. Their need to get laid has meant
that they conspire to deny women substitutes for having babies - although
I haven't yet seen evidence of a male plot to limit the supply of cats
available as pets.

Maybe that could be the plot of a science-fiction story!

Niven's "The Locusts" for some values of "make fertility dependent on".

(a) Cats keep humans as servants, the whole "pet" thing is a scam.
(b) I hate to break it to you but women want to get laid too.

Women certainly aren't hopelessly opposed to sexual activity.
That is a trait that would be selected out.

What _has_ happened, though, is this:

- When humans stood upright, their internal anatomy was
restructured. As a result, the vaginal orgasm ceased to be an
automatic concomitant of intercourse.

- Hence, women, unlike other female mammals, do not go
into "heat" around the time of ovulation. They don't have a
desperate need at that time of the month to experience orgasm -
because back when men were cavemen, they didn't really
understand about the clitoris, so for women, "heat" would produce
a desire unlikely to ever be satisfied.

- The menstrual cycle, essential for ovulation, still continued to
exist, though, and so women sort of feel good around that time.
They're just not (even) madly obsessed with sex (then)... unlike
men at all times of the month.

- But the human race didn't go extinct, since the rest of
our animal instincts didn't disappear, just that *one*. Men
still had their sexual urges intact. Women and men both still
wanted emotional contact and companionship, as well as
tactile contact and stimulation. Women still bonded with their
children as infants.

The net result was the world we have now.

Since women are no longer motivated to have sex by
an overpowering sexual urge of their own, even though
they can still enjoy it with the right partner under the
right circumstances... men have been forced to work
harder.

- Work at the relationship, show her that you love her.

- Exploit the fact that women are sidelined by pregnancy,
and have lower upper-body strength, by taking advantage
of their economic dependency.

And, since by and large the primary interest in penetrative
acts is on the male side, we also have other fun stuff like
the double standard, and wives being treated as chattels.

Of course, _that_ sort of thing has finally abated somewhat
with the rise of civilization.

But the rise of feminism has given rise to such toxic male
reactions as the "incel" movement. The male-female
relationship is messed up, too many women get killed by
their ex-husbands or ex-boyfriends and so on, and so a
significant proportion of those women who have careers...
take advantage of them as an opportunity to avoid the risk
of a sexual relationship with a male.

Too many of them are still violent beasts not long enough
out of the caves.

Since I'm not willing to, say, castrate half the male babies
at birth, and I'm also not willing to brainwash women into
being sexually compliant, I view modifying the sex ratio
as about the only way of attempting a solution that violates
no one's rights.

We have had Trump in the United States. There's Orban in
Hungary, and Bolsonaro in Brazil.

And then there's Putin.

Ukraine is Czechoslovakia, and Estonia will soon be Poland.
In a few years, Putin's tanks will be in downtown Paris - _if_
the world avoids a global thermonuclear war.

Once again, economic malaise has led to people seeking
desperate solutions, and it's provided an opening for
demagogues to take power. A world order of peaceful
democracies is collapsing, being replaced by dictatorships
ready to wage war in order to paper over their own internal
contradictions.

Yes. The Earth population peaked at 2 billion in 1942 in the Draka
books. 100 years later (and three books), the Drakas had reduced the
population of the Earth to a half billion and turned much of the planet
into vast nature preserves. After, they defeated the United States
alliance. The first book was published in 1988.
