The knowledge in this one's not so much forbidden (by some
authority) as it is deadly:

<http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/title.cgi?55801>

A long-suffering, bitter scientist discovers something that will
allow an individual to destroy the world. Due to his generally
crappy life, he decides to publish the knowledge and let the chips
fall where they may.

In this one (which was just mentioned in another thread), the
search for knowledge is generally forbidden:

<http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/title.cgi?55741>

It seems rather strange that an academic and polymath would have
written a story with the moral that some knowledge should be
suppressed.

chronoscope = newspapers.com -- and not now under government
control.

If this thread lasts long enough, I might have more to say on this.

What *I* think was implausible about "The Dead Past", but required to
allow the plot to take place, was that they needed to wreck academic
research to keep the secret of the chronoscope...

instead of just placing tight controls on one vital component of the
device.

No secret documents, no secret government
discussion, no door locks that can't be defeated
by using the chronoscope to look at the key -
or to watch a combination number being used -
or to look inside the lock and figure it out.

On the other hand, you could watch a lot of crimes
being committed.

Which means that more things can be declared a crime.

Whether the government is right or wrong, It would take
a lot if getting used to.

It's possible to read "The Dead Past" as having the moral, instead, that any
attempt to solve a problem by suppressing knowledge is doomed to failure.

Need clarification here. Do you mean controls on research into
the vital component, or on actual production of a vital device?
