Rediscovery: Science Fiction by Women (1953 - 1957) edited by Gideon Marcus

https://jamesdavisnicoll.com/review/standing-toe-to-toe

An anthology of classic-era SF by women, only two of which I'd encountered
before.

Madeleine L'Engle wrote short fiction?!
As with Andre Norton, I'm surprised at how long it was before I wondered about this.
Looking it up, I see it's no wonder I had no wonder.

Your review of the first volume says it was inspired by reading an inheritance of old sf mags.
This second volume is set further back in time from the first;
does that mean actual work had to be involved digging them out?

Two of the stories, as you made clear there, as opposed
to two of the writers.

Something of a relief to hear that. I'd only read one of the above.

From _Fantastic Adventures_, October 1941:

.... we took a poll of several thousand readers' comments and
discovered that the ten most liked authors were (in order):

1. Don Wilcox
2. William P. McGivern
3. John York Cabot [pseudonym of David Wright O'Brien]
4. Nelson S. Bond
5. David Wright O'Brien
6. James Norman
7. Edgar Rice Burroughs
8. Robert Moore Williams
9. David V. Reed
10. Eando Binder [Otto Binder as of 1941]

Sic transit gloria mundi...

I believe Journey Press had a substantial crew combing back issues for
candidates.

Well, Burroughs still has readers. And I have a copy of Bond's
_Lancelot Biggs, Spaceman_, which is delightful--somewhat soft-
and-squishy SF rather than hard, but funny, rather like Asimov's
work later on. I have not read, I've never even heard of the
other eight.

And I'm going to turn eighty this summer. But I didn't start
reading SF till 1949, when I was seven.

I'm embarassed to say the first SF I read was Foundation + Empire (yep
didn't read Foundation till later....) when I was 12 around 1967.

When I read Second Foundation I developed a huge crush on Arkady
Darrell even though I knew she was a fictional character.....

Not long afterwards I discovered Heinlein though I think my mother
would have been shocked had she known what 'I will fear no evil' was
about and the age at which I read it! :)

The first SF I can remember reading was Schmitz's "The Second
Night of summer," looking over my mother's shoulder. The first
Foundation story I read was _Second Foundation_, in hardback (a
present from my aunt). Lots of goshwow at the end of that one.

When I started reading SF, Heinlein was writing juveniles for
_Boys' Life_ and Scribner's. When the work to which you refer
came out, I was nearly thirty and Heinlein was no longer on my
reading list.

Indeed!

I've read something from each of Bond, Burroughs, and Binder (huh,
the killer B's) buy never even heard of the others.

O'Brien must have been something special, seeing as how he got
both third and fifth.

I've got some Don Wilcox on my TBR pile. Probably ought to get to it
sometime.

I've read Bond, Burroughs & Binder.

Binder is now probably best known for creating Adam Link, one of the early robots that wasn't a menace to society. The first story about him, "I, Robot", was adapted to TV in the two different iterations of THE OUTER LIMITS. During the first of these, Asimov got calls from some of his non-SF oriented friends telling him that some joker had stolen his title for this story, and he had to admit he was the joker who stole the title from this story.

"Nelson S. Bond" sounds like I've read it before, but that's all I can say without cheating and looking it up.

One of the Lancelot Biggs stories was in the multivolume anthology of
children's literature we had at the house growing up. I always thought
it was a rip that the "Science Fiction" volume was severely shorter than
the rest because it was the last book, and half of it was devoted to the
index for the whole series.

I suspect that if somebody did a poll of _Astounding SF_ readers in
October 1941, the list would be somewhat different.

> 1. Don Wilcox

The only story of his that I remember reading is "The Voyage that Lasted
600 Years" (a generation ship story that was published 7 months before
"Universe").

> 2. William P. McGivern

Don't believe I ever read any of his Lancelot Biggs stories, but I have
read at least one of his stories that appeared in _Astounding SF_.

> 6. James Norman

Famous, though definitely on the downslope of his career in 1941.

> 8. Robert Moore Williams

Not certain if I have read anything of his (he appeared in a bunch of
Ace doubles and I can't remember which ones that I have read).

> 9. David V. Reed

IIRC, I have read the _Adam Link - Robot_ fixup.
