I think that was more of a slam at the new middle class. French was compulsory in public schools, with even Churchill being able to ask Weygand in French what the hell he'd done with his reserves.

If you didn't speak French, you were clearly an upstart who went to a state school.

I haven't any. If I could get to the UC Berkeley library, they
probably have some, but it's so difficult to get me out of the

English is the closest thing we have in this era to a world
language.

So I understand; the Norwegian will tell you the Dane speaks as

At a meeting years ago I saw an Icelandic and a Danish scientist speaking in a language I didn't understand. I asked
another Dane which language they were using, Danish or Icelandic. She replied "both". The Dane was speaking
Danish, the other Icelandic.

Using my knowledge of English and then-knowledge of German I was able to get a few pages into LOTR in Norwegian. Of course, it helped that I knew what was going on. I wouldn't have gotten so far into Moby Dick (except the first sentence, of course).

And I'm sure the Dane will have similar sentiments about the
Norwegian. (And, as I understand it, the Icelanders will laugh at
both.)

The excellent _Stand Still. Stay Silent_ webcomic (now unfortunately
finished) had ongoing gags riffing on this. A similar story someone told
me was of two US physicists, one from California and the other from
Kentucky, with respective accents, talking at a conference. In a
Baltimore bank, we Australians _and_ the bank vice-president had no
idea what a Southerner was saying to us...

Cheers, David Duffy.

I worked for a while with a guy from east London, with the most
pronounced Cockney accesnt I've ever hear outside of television
stereotypes, and a guy from rural Georgia. The rest of us could make
out what they were both saying, most of the time, but to communicate
with each other, they literally needed a translator. Fortunately,
they both found it as funny as everyone else.

From a language standpoint, Norway is the most frustrating place I've
visited. Japan, OK, the characters aren't even in my alphabet.
Germany, the letters all make sense but collect up into words that look
like a transliteration of someone sneezing (and I had high school
German). Norway the words all looked like they should have been
English, but I didn't know any of them. The constant sense of "I ought
to be able to read this" was... weird.

Is there a mystery equivalent of the ISFDB? I am interested in seeing
that cover. BTW, so what if the cover shows the murderer setting up his
booby trap, he dismantled it in front of an audience who didn't realize
what he was doing.

Years back, I worked (not too closely) with a guy who had an incredibly
hard to understand accent. Eventually, the HR department enrolled him
in an ESL class. This pissed him off, since he was a Cockney.

(By coincidence, I watched _My Fair Lady_ last night.)

Something very like that happens in the play on which the novel
is based. The murderer disassemblase the sprurnbg booby trap in
front of most of the dramatis personae and the audience. In the
last act, Lord Peter figures out what, and how set up, the trap
was, and reassembles it in a way that's incapable of harming the
murder, but scares the living daylights out of the murderer, who
curses Lord Peter in language equivalent to a confession.

Since the story began its career as a play performed before an
audience, with live actors and a prop that if mis-set could
actally hurt somebody, the edition of the play that I have
includes a warning note from Sayers that before each and every
dress rehearsal and performance, the stage manager *and the actor
playing the murderer* must inspect the (faked) booby trap and
make sure that it will work as intended.

Honestly, ESL was, I think, the right choice, since that kind of
thick Cockney accent is *not* English as we know it.

I didn't know that, but it doesn't surprise me.

We get the occasional roach in our downstairs bathroom (it has a
door leading to a cubbyhole containing the water heater, and
therefrom to the ground under the house, and there's an inch-high
gap under the door).

I've never seen one living, though: only squashed flat and missing
most of its legs, because any roach getting into that bathroom becomes
an instant play-toy for the cats.

California cockroaches must taste better than Florida cockroaches.

I remember Fred the Cat's first encounter with one. He jumped on it,
batted it around for a bit, then crunched it. People who think that
cats are incapable of facial expressions have never seen the look of
total disgust that appeared on Fred's face, as he spat it out and then
hocked for a while like he was trying to bring up a hairball. He
never touched another cockroach, and not because he didn't hunt (he
was a squirrel specialist).

Context is everything, and from the context, I thought that you
meant "Fat Freddy's Cat". (I got better.)

There's no "me" in "team". There's no "us" in "team", either.

Both types, actually. For instance:
