Good question. However, the fact that the strips aren't printed in
color wasn't fatal.

The joke is obvious from context, and the character's style of
facial hair _is_ associated with African-Americans as well.

Your knowledge of African-American facial hair styles surpasses

Actually, today's Dilbert had PHB talking about running the scam in
reverse to pay for college.

Ziptone, or whatever the digital equivalent is.

Ie, a way to indicate that the character is
African American, using only black ink, and
not turning him into an opaque ebon blob.

As it is, the joke is entirely different in color
and monotone.

[No, I disagree with Quaddie that the beard
style makes the race clear.]

Ideally there would be two different versions. I remember a
really nice panel of The Phantom fighting a lion in which the color
version would have been much better without the ziptone effect.
Of course The Phantom is an action/adventure strip so the art is much less
cartoony.

You know what's interesting about that? My local paper
didn't run that strip today -- they ran a strip from a year
ago -- and I would never have noticed if you hadn't posted
the above. I can't find anything in the paper saying they
substituted that strip, either.

Interesting,
Tony

Possible, but unlikely. If forced to speculate, I'd guess it has more to do
with the editors and/or company lawyers being uncomfortable with the
race aspect.

I seem to recall that with The Phantom they went back and colourized
old, originally black-and-white stories at some point.

There are times when the Phantom leaves the monochrome and walks
the Sunday-strips of the newspaper like an ordinary man.

Well, May 2nd and May 4th strips also were on the subject.

On the other hand, maybe your newspaper is embarrassed
about how the strip prints without colours.

Or if it was exactly a year adrift, it could just be a mistake.
<https://dilbert.com/strip/2021-05-03> is about the
boss assigning a workplace arch-enemy for Dilbert.
<https://dilbert.com/strip/2021-05-06> has Dilbert
creating an app to end racism, and a reader comment
calling - probably insincerely - for more Black characters.
Possibly before Black got to be spelled with a
capital B - it isn't - but, can someone remind me
when that happened? Since we had lockdowns, it's
even harder to remember "when was it" information.

FWIW Adams has tweeted that the reliance of the strip on being printed
in color was intentional:

https://twitter.com/ScottAdamsSays/status/1521511843159674880

All part of my plan. (Of course I know they print without color in
some market.)

The May 4 is another substitution here - also without notification
or comment by the paper.

Could be.

True, but it wasn't exactly a year (the substitute was 5/5/21),
and today's substitution is from February 2020.

Strange that they're doing it, and strange that they're
not saying anything about it.

Not strange that they aren't saying anything. They are obviously afraid
of controversy and/or "offending" some readers, so why even tell them
"Hey, we're not printing this comic because we think it is offensive."?
That would itself just get a lot of readers mad at them. Better to
just substitute and say nothing.
