"Stone Dogs (Draka #3)" by S. M. Stirling
https://www.amazon.com/Stone-Dogs-Draka-S-M-Stirling/dp/0671720090/

Book number three of a five book alternate history military science
fiction series. I read the well printed and well bound MMPB published
by Baen in 1990 that I bought used on Amazon since there are no more new
copies. I read the fourth book in the series recently and am now back
tracking. I have ordered a used copy of the fifth book in the series
even though it is a collection of short stories by various authors.

Wow, just wow at the damage and loss on alternate Earth. There is a
rumor that Jim Baen rejected this book six times before Steve Stirling
persuaded him to publish it as is. Yes, the USA loses the battle for
Earth. But, did they ?

After the American revolutionary war, the British loyalists in the
colonies mostly escaped to Canada. But in an alternate timeline, those
90,000 British loyalists were exiled to the southern tip of Africa at
the direction of George Washington from 1783 to 1786. They took over
the Dutch colony of South Africa as other unwanted groups joined them
and merged into their slave holding culture. They eventually called
themselves the Domination of Draka.

By 1948, the Domination of Draka is 40 million free peoples and 1,000
million slaves XXXXXX serfs, one half of the people on the planet Earth.
They have spread throughout the entire continent of Africa to Egypt,
the middle east (Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia), Turkey, Kazakhstan,
Afghanistan, and they have just completed taking Italy and then Germany.
The rest of Europe fell quickly. They have used their incredible
mineral riches to develop and purchase the best weapons in the world.
And they have nuclear weapons that they used to destroy the German
armies, not understanding of the dangers of fallout on their own armies.

"Service to the State" is the typical saying from one Draka citizen to
another citizen. Their reply is "Glory to the Race". These sayings
exemplify all you need to know about the Draka. Their goal is to
subjugate the entire human race. The Domination has subjugated the
entire continents of Africa, Europe, and most of Asia. The only areas
not subjugated are North America, South America, Australia, Great
Britain, India, and Japan, The Alliance of Free Democracies. The
Domination and the Alliance are in a cold war with spying and
underground activities that go along with such while the Domination is
putting Europe to the yoke.

Several people have criticized the pace of the technological achievement
between the Domination and the Alliance. Specifically the intense space
race with orbital forts with gigawatt lasers in the 1960s, lunar
colonies in the 1970s, and Mars colonies in the 1980s. And all kinds of
space warships and asteroid belt mining in the 1970s. Sounds
accelerated to me also but the Domination is a much more difficult
adversary for the USA instead of the Soviet Union.

The prolific author has a website at:
https://smstirling.com/

The five books of the series are listed at:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Domination

My rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Amazon rating: 3.9 out of 5 stars (26 reviews)

I also forgot to mention that by the year 1980 the Draka free citizens
are using gene manipulation on themselves and their serfs. They are
making the serfs more compliant and raising their IQ by 10 points to an
average 110. For themselves, they are making their reactions faster,
raising their IQ to an average 140, making their bones denser, and
increasing their muscle strength. Further gene manipulations were
performed later such as a pheromone emission by the free citizens that
the serfs were genetically programmed to obey.

Also during the EurAsian war, we call it WWII, they created a upper
class of Janissaries from the serfs. During the taking of Germany, they
had twelve million Janissaries providing shock troops to support the 1.2
million free citizen army. The Janissaries were allowed to use
cartridge weapons and incurred lifetime trusted privileges if they
survived. Many of the plantations used Janissaries as overseers to keep
the thousands of serfs in line.

And in the book, there are 42 pages of appendixes outlining the timeline
of the Draka empire and their technological / biological achievements.

I enjoyed the series though have the following comments:
- Stirling has a long way to go before he could be fairly described as
a prolific author
- Of COURSE the Draka books describe terrible acts - the Draka are
villains and by definition villains do terrible things. How is this
not obvious?
- there are some major holes in the stories particularly in the area
of the development of technologies. On the other hand it's good
somebody tried to sketch out an alternate technological development
model (How can you tell I'm a big fan of the Civilization games
series?)
- I thought Gwendolyn (in Drakon) was a terrific villain
- Stirling deserves raw tomatoes thrown for the horrific pun in the
title of the first book. One wonders if he's had them at cons? (Or at
least outraged groans?)

I thought that same about Gwendolyn in Drakon. In fact, I gave it five
stars on the strength of her character alone. And I am fairly sure that
I would intensely dislike her in real life.

Stirling has 61 books published now. What level is prolific to you ?

61? Obviously I don't get out enough.

I very much do remember his columns in Byte magazine years ago...

I suspect you recall Jerry Pournelle's _Computing at Chaos Manor_ column
in BYTE.

I knew they had collaborated though Pournelle is more known for his
collaborations with Larry Niven.

Ha ha ha - I'm actually trying hard NOT to think about Mothers' Day
this Sunday since I had the dubious "privilege" of burying my wife 6
weeks ago and this will be the first Mothers' day without her.

My main priority right now is keeping my extremely bright but
emotionally fragile daughter from crying too much that day.

So while your joke IS funny (and it is) this is not your average times
for me.

Have a wonderful weekend and I will do my best to do likewise.

I've got weird associations--my mother died on mother's day, and my SO
was born on mother's day.

Well, it's a movable feast: I started seeing the ads and thought,
"What? THIS Sunday?" Turns out it's "second Sunday in May."

OTOH it's Hal's and my fifty-first anniversary. He bought a
sinfully rich chocolate cake at Costco.

It's also Bats' Day at Disneyland, so the rest of the family are
in Anaheim. Hal came back from dropping them at the airport and
said, "At last, we are alone." We'll save some cake for them.

Wow - that's impressive. Clearly it was long ago that the pain doesn't
hurt daily - which is good. We're not yet there as today is the 2
month anniversary.

Thanks - yes my daughter is both extremely bright and emotionally
frail - which is probably why she didn't get offered an articling job
after law school. (Long story but around the time of my mother's death
15 years ago who she was very close to)

I will just have to get her through the day. I'm taking her to a
brunch and will probably sliip the server a card saying "PLEASE don't
say anything about Mother's Day!"

I've got about 30 of his books, maybe 40, and there is no churn in my
opinion. He has stretched the "Dies The Fire" series as far as it can
go (and possibly too far) but who can blaim him ? SMS writes alternate
history stories which are very popular.

My father and I have been hawking a computer software program since
1969, we and our six employees spend the money that it makes us. So we
could be accused of churning also.

Given I'm a 25 year veteran of both soc.history.what-if and
alt.history.what-if I'm astonished I haven't read his complete opus
then.

So I looked up
https://www.bookseriesinorder.com/s-m-stirling/
and found I had read about 28-29 of them (mostly the Draka books and
the 'Emberverse' books though his total list is a bit fuzzy as he's
done a lot of collaborations. I hadn't realized he'd done nearly so
much in the Honor Harrington universe!
