I'm sorry that people who aren't white exist, and I know this must be very trying for you. My heart goes out to you in your time of turmoil. In 8 live action films, it is just horrific that one would feature Black and brown leads.

And to feature music by Black people is disturbing. Everyone knows that the only acceptable non-woke, non-"diverse" American music is folk songs that date back before 1800 or so, when a certain element of rhythm began escaping the plantations and finding its way into American culture.

For a movie focusing on beasts, there are plenty of folk songs about animals -- "Froggie Went A-Courtin'" would be great, if Spittor was included. Might need to gender-flip Rattrap so she can be "Miss Mousie."

(They would need to recreate an earlier version, pre-banjo, as the banjo is a "diverse" instrument originating in Africa, recreated by the enslaved people, modernized with steel strings by white folks, and then incorporated into minstrel shows that were so offensive that basically no Black person would touch one from the early 1900s through to the present day, with the exception of the Carolina Chocolate Drops -- but I might have just committed a CRT)

Seriously, it's like you are looking for reasons to be offended.

It's a franchise that's been getting a bit stale, so they are trying to interest a different audience assuming that the existing waning audience will go see it anyway. It's not "woke", it's accountants running numbers which is the least "woke" thing possible.

It takes place in the 1990s, so the soundtrack is either going to be grunge or rap, and since Optimus Primal is unlikely to be shooting up in his parents' basement and then killing himself, it's going to be rap. If it makes you feel any better, there's a possibility that a movie with a lot of rap and a giant robotic ape has the potential to be inadvertently really racist.

I would love it to take place in the Pacific Northwest, with everyone in flannel, and listening to Nirvana and Soundgarden in temperate rain forests, but not everything has to pander to me. Plus, if they wanted to have "Black Hole Sun" be a big number, they would probably be reusing the basic McGuffin of ROTF.
(Optimus Primal as a Bigfoot would have been amazing... I wouldn't object to adding a wendigo to the cast either... it's not going to be very true to Beast Wars anyway, so rather than wedge in a Cheetah and a Rhino, just go with what makes sense. Rhinox could explain that he used to transform into a rhino, back when rhinos weren't basically extinct, and now he transforms into a pacific northwest tree octopus, if that's not too "woke")

Maybe you don't like Transformers movies. Maybe you should just shrug and sit this one out. Lots of people don't like Transformers movies. Why would you choose to marinate in things you resent?

It's like the old saying "All hate and no play makes Jack a boring asshole."

And if the new movie fails, there will inevitably be course correction and a reboot in a few years, as it is a massive, moneymaking franchise. Plus, that reboot might be more to your liking.

Although Transformers was largely the creation of white, Jewish, and Japanese males, it’s resonated with a diverse and global fanbase because of its universal themes.

It’s not troubling that the films would include more non-white hires. It is troubling that the director somehow sees this as essential. His comments convey a sense that he’s hijacking a beloved franchise to “tell a story about our culture, our people, and see ourselves portrayed on the big screen.”

This film isn’t for you, and it’s not for me - “it’s for all my homies in the projects.”

This isn’t inclusive. It’s needlessly and aggressively divisive.

Transformers is and should be a franchise for all people, no matter who they are. The director’s imperative should be to tell a great story that echoes with everyone, not just the ones who share his skin color.

Ultimately, he’s free to make the movie he wants to make. And we’re free to support it or not. At this point, I’m going to sit this one out.

After all, it’s not for me.

Where do you think the interview was? It was a black media outlet. You
aren’t the intended audience for that message. The director is telling
black and brown folks that he is put something of their story in there, for
—sigh— the homies.

Presumably there will be different emphasis for other media outlets, and
none of them will end up being particularly honest. In a franchise that has
Mudflap and Skids, a bit of extra outreach might make sense to try to say
“remember those racial stereotype robots? We’re not doing that anymore”

Do you remember the interviews for the other movies in geek press, about
how the first Transformers movie was going to recapturing the magic of the
original TV show?

Like that.

I’m not saying “go see this movie that is likely to be terrible” (we got
six terrible movies, and one ok one, so odds aren’t good), but I am saying
exercise a little bit of media literacy, and don’t assume that statements
to niche press are entirely reflective of the whole.

It turns out the Black and Latino experience generally does not involve
transforming robots. Whatever is there in the movie is going to be modest
set dressing for a McGuffin chase. We know the cast has lots of big name
actors who are white, after all.

If we get a remake of Spike Lee’s “Malcolm X” or “She’s Gotta Have It” with
giant robots, I would be shocked. Or if it dealt with the CIA selling crack
cocaine in Los Angeles through intermediaries to fund right wing terrorists
in Nicaragua, and unequal sentencing laws for the users. Or the epidemic of
young Black men in jail.

My money in on yet another McGuffin chase, with somewhat darker skin on a
prominent character, and four references to popular rap songs that you
notice and five you don’t (assuming your knowledge of rap is about the same
as mine). Plenty of reasons not to see *that* movie.

Of all the problems with Bayverse films, of all the underage sex jokes and randomly completely changing cities with a few steps are people so hung up on skin color now.

The white guys sucked writing most of these movies. Perhaps new writers will be a change to the churned out cash grabs centered around Marky Mark acting like he's 20 years younger than he is? Maybe we'll have real dialogue instead of insert John Goodman Quote from the John Goodman pre-recorded soundbox. Maybe people won't walk from South Dakota to China in 10 steps.

- Jon Voight in TF1
- Frances McDormand and John Malkovich in TF3
- Stanley Tucci in TF4
- the legendary Anthony Hopkins in TF5

IIRC, there weren't any big names for either TF2 or Bumblebee, unless you count that invisible wrestler fellow.

Do we know if we're getting any similar caliber of on-screen talent for RotB?

My complaint isn't that John Goodman is a big name, my complaint is that he wasn't acting with the rest of the cast. They got him to say 20 or 30 hackneyed one-liner cliches in a sound booth and then plugged that in to a see-n-say and just had Hound spout random non-sequitors for most of the movie.

Agreed - Bay has the unparalleled ability to corral talent, then squander that talent. John Goodman and Ken Watanabe were maddeningly underutilized.

He was iconic as Depth Charge, but Richard Newman will always be the quintessential Rhinox. Still, it's nice to see at least one of the original cast back in action. I wouldn't have guessed it'd be him (Scott McNeil should have just been hired to play all the parts).

Thanks for the update. Chalk gave us a decade of leadership as both Primal and Prime; that he wasn't considered or contacted is both saddening and maddening at the same time. He deserved a shot at the role, at the very least.
