of the winners.

Well, I'm an 0-fer on that list. I might look at the novel winner,
although it's not my usual fare. Who knows with the shorter works.

It's part of a series but each work stands on its own.

I see that Tor.com has a free novella in the series, "A Dead Djinn in
Cairo". That seems like a way to sample.

Or if you get a Hugo membership and there is the usual sample bundle,
you can get it and most of the works up for the Hugo for the price of
membership.

I read the novella and liked it well enough. The background reminds me
a bit of the Invisible Library books by Genevieve Cogman.

The library has the novel, so I got it and started.

Finished it up. Generally pretty good. I figured out the villain pretty
well before the reveal but I don't know how mysterious it was supposed
to be.

It's a book that I was very glad to be reading as an ebook, because I
had to look up a LOT of words and that's so much easier when one can
select and look up. The built-in dictionary and "Siri knowledge" did a
pretty decent job.
