With regard to the Drake, google "Casaba Howitzer". That wasn't
science fiction and the US was in the process of building it as a
weapon for Orion, when the test ban treaty pulled the plug on Orion.

I have read "The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress" several times. And I am
working my way through "The Expanse", I have book #7 in my SBR.

Another SF cannon book is "Hellfire" by Jean Johnson about the war with
the Greys and the Saliks. The Human-Feyori captain of the space cruiser
with the mile long electromagnetic cannon was a precognitive so she
would know where the cannon's blast ended up at, minimizing friendly fire.

The Expanse also includes rail guns as primary weapons.

Perhaps nothing is quite as cannon as Avram Davidson's "Bumberboom"

When I read the article, I immediately thought of "that story where
they haul the big cannon around" but couldn't recall the title. But
luckily for me, someone in comments and you mentioned it.

IRL, somebody wants to fire freight into orbit using a hybrid rocket/mass
accelerator tech .

[quote]

SpinLaunch is developing a kinetic energy space launch system that reduces
dependency on traditional chemical rockets, with the goal of significantly
lowering the cost of access to space while increasing the frequency of launch.
The technology uses a vacuum-sealed centrifuge to spin a rocket and then
hurl it to space at up to 5,000 miles per hour (8,000 km/h). The rocket then
ignites its engines at an altitude of roughly 200,000 ft (61,000 m) to reach
orbital speed of 17,500 miles per hour (28,200 km/h). Peak acceleration
would be approximately 10,000 g. If successful, the acceleration concept
is projected to lower the cost of launches and to use much less power, with
the price of a single space launch reduced by a factor of 20 to under US
$500,000.
