Due to some unforeseen events, I have been going through the contents
of my writing box, full of old manuscripts, carbons, and fully typed
stories affixed with form rejection notices.

If I could give some advice to my younger self, apart from 'Write better,
stupid!', it would be 'Spring for the plastic coated paperclips!'

What a rusty mess.

Were plastic coated paperclips even a thing back in that day? :)

I've done good in this world. Now I'm tired and just want to be a cranky
dirty old man.

Depends on "the day" but I found a box of them that somebody gave me
when I was in college, so that would be the '70s.

That's a good question. I know we never had such in our house growing up.
And I probably would have balked at the expense.
