Has Dorothy posted anything lately ? Her last posting was on May 23 on
my Pearls Before Swine posting.

I am hoping that her ALS has not progressed further.

I do not see anything new at
http://www.kithrup.com/~djheydt/

Thanks,
Lynn

she had just posted very recently before it was started, and so there was no
cause for concern, but I was mistaken.

I emailed the individual that handles her website and he said she hadn't
logged in for a while and that he'd try to reach her. His update was

Hopefully she's more than alive. One of my hobbies is organizing chess
tournaments and one of Canada's best known tournament directors (and a
personal friend) is alive but deep in dementia - like Star Trek's
Nichelle Nichols.

Dorothy was diagnosed with ALS a couple of months ago. She just turned
80. She was having trouble using the PC mouse a couple of weeks ago.

(1) Am VERY sorry to hear that (2nd last sentence)
(2) (last sentence) That will CERTAINLY be most welcome.

Hopefully you are being unduly pessimistic....

(Hal Heydt)

Unfortuneately, it wasn't optimistic. She died Tuesday evening.

I am still overwhelmed by the enormity of her loss. I keep
looking and the bed where she sat, due to chronic fatigue and
then ALS. And she's not there. We were married for 51 years.

While in Stanford hospital, she wrote the following to be posted
after hear death.

------

To my family, friends, and anyone else interested:

After I have died, tell anyone anything you like, ending with this text:

Cynthia, widow of Demetrius Duilius Artifex (and of Komi, son of
Endreigon, the only husband she had loved, and of Demodoros, whom
no one remembered any more), sat dying in her bed.

Her daughters, granddaughters, and the household servants were caring
for her as she could no longer care for them, but she slipped out
through the soles of her feet and into the depths of the earth.

The place had not changed much since she had seen it last: its grey
colors had faded a trifle, and the stream that had flowed between
her and Komi had stopped moving: frozen, perhaps? But she was dead
now, and could cross it.

The silent dead sat among the trees, the spirits of men and gods
and perhaps others, though if her friends the Qualities were
here, they too had faded. But two remembered morning stars still
shone, Komi's eyes, and she found a place to sit beside him. No
one spoke; perhaps it was unlawful, or maybe just impossible.

But something that might have been time passed, and now a light
shone from the east, filling earth and air with color, and a grat
chorus of voices: LIFT UP YOUR HEADS, YOU GATES, AND BE LIFTED
UP, YOU EVERLASTING DOORS, THAT THE KING OF GLORY MAY COME IN.

who is the King of Glory?

THE LORD OF HOSTS: HEIS THE KING OF GLORY

All of us here send our condolences and sympathy. While we can't miss
her anywhere near as much as you do, we will miss her too.

I've had that running through my head all day. Partly because it so nicely dovetails Pagan ideas of Hades with Christian ideas of resurrection only after the second coming (or possibly of the harrowing of Hell, if our heroine was pre-Christian), and partly because of the gentle companionship it shows.

Cynthia is 3rd century BCE. She was involed in the First Punic
War. Dorothy, on the other hand, was an adult convert to Roman
Catholicism (before I met her). So what she wrote is, I think, a
synthesis of her development of Cynthia and her own beliefs.

If Dorothy was correct, she is in a better place, and I will tear
the afterlife apart seeking her out. If I am correct, the only
thing left of her will be her writings and the memories of the living.

She'll certainly live on in my memories, after the 25+ years I've
enjoyed chatting with her on Usenet. I'm so sorry for your loss Hal, and
thank you so much for keeping her online all these years. Her strength
of personality and kindness was always present in her writing here too,
not just her formally published works. It is a great loss.

Thank you.

At the beginning of next May (we set our wedding date for the
weekend after the SCA West Kindom May Coronation Tourney, so it was
8 May 1971), I need to be at the Saturday night bardic session
where an annual memorial for those lost during the year is held.

I have located the notebook with her bardic works and I intend to
recite (do NOT ask me to sing...ever) one of her works. It
started when jokes were going around about how many people from
any given kingdom it took to light a candle. e.g. How many
Calontiri does it take to light a candle? 47. But you should
*see* the ceremony.

She wrote that it didn't take anyone from the West because our
candle has been burning bright since the beginning time (founding
the SCA).

She lit so many candles that light the world, even though her own
has now gone out.

I think I may have surprised Hal on another forum. I was having an
argument with this guy about some point of engineering and I asked him
"why don't you get an engineering degree and do it then" and he
replied with something about his sick linguist wife (not quoting him
here, that's my paraphrase). I said "Your name wouldn't be 'Hal' by
any chance" and the conversation vanished shortly after.

My apologies to him if that was indeed him and that discussion alarmed
him.

I do hope you make a good recovery.
