I did read Wayfarers 1-3. For my tastes, they uniformly decreased, and #3 was
uninteresting enough that I probably won't read #4.

As to your 2nd footnote:
"
2: Not to mention series in which the focus jumps to the next generation. That can be successful (the Vorkosigan series shifting focus from Cordelia to Miles) or an abject failure (Poul Anderson’s A Game of Empire , which focused on Flandry’s bastard daughter Diana). I’m sure there must be more such series, but none come to mind at the moment. Remind me?
"

I sort-of-quickly came up with Dune, Amber, and maybe/probably Lensman,
but nothing else quickly leapt to mind.

I enjoyed the book. In the hands of a different author, the catastrophe
would have been part of a plot and our group would have pulled together
to defeat the evil-doers, but this was in keeping with her series.

Would I have preferred a bunch of adventures of The Wayfarer? Yes. But
I didn't get to make that decision.

There is a sort of addendum to C.J.Cherryh's Chanur series, Chanur's legacy, in which the focus shifts to Captain Hilfy Chanur, who was a junior crew member in the first book - I like all of the Chanur series, including that one. Come to think of it, should Cyteen: Regenesis count or not?
