Odd historical detail: when this was published, American women weren't
legally livestock. Weird but true.

I'd guess that those laws are still on the books in at least one
American state....

They still aren't! Although it may be wondered how long that will last
in some states. It probably won't be until 2024 that we get a Fugitive
Woman Law...

At least some of them sound potentially interesting.

That fans of SF who live in the U.S. are more discerning concerning lapses
in the setting of stories set in the U.S. than of stories set in Kenya... ought not
to be terribly surprising. They judge what they know.

As for the short story by Kim Newman: Alan Moore's works come with
pictures, which likely explains their greater appeal to comic book fans. If
nothing else, that ensures they're for sale in the right bookstores.

It's not set in Kenya. It's an oribital colony that replicates the
savanah and is populated by people who want to go back to pre-European
ways.

Interesting choice of words since some respondents have been saying
livestock is what the court decision on Roe v Wade makes women.

Rather hyperbolic I'd say.

Traditional Family Values was, is, and will forever be based on one
priciple:

women are cattle
--
"In this connexion, unquestionably the most significant
development was the disintegration, under Christian
influence, of classical conceptions of the family and
of family right."

Of course! How else are you going to protect their divine magical power
of giving you more sons to send off to war to get you more women if you
can't control who they breed with?

Indeed stopping the death of a majority female(51% or 52%) group is
obviously misogynist and the perpetrates should be stoned.

Looking at the summations, I remember 2 of these stories: A Walk In The
Sun, and Jack. Contrary to the reviewer, I rather liked Jack. Will 30+
years change my perspective? We will see.

I don't remember how I felt about AWITS. I don't even remember much
about it. Now I will have to reread them both.
