A little exaggeration there. I mean, there is gotta be some time for
engineering all the scientific stuff.

Yup, been doing that for almost 50 years now.

And I have learned a fact over the years. If the PhD says something is
an approximation, watch out ! The edge conditions will eat you alive.

A high school chemistry teacher like to tell us that the way science
advanced is when the older, more experienced scientists would say "Oh,
we know that this is what will happen when you try that", some student
or younger scientist tries "that" and gets something other than "this"
at which point the more experienced scientists go "Wait, what? Lemme
see that!". :D

He'd also ask the class a question and if no one answered quickly enough
would say, "Well, what is it? Yes? No? Maybe so? I don't know?"

The semester I had him it was the first class of the day for me. I'd
sit at my desk in the front row, put my head down and kind of doze.
Until he handed out tests. Then I'd finish the test in half the time
any one else took and go back to dozing. Got straight A's in the class.
He never gave me any trouble for seeming to not pay attention. Hee hee.

The tooltip could be seen as referring to https://xkcd.com/435/ - which I think is one of the great xkcds. In fact, reaching back in time to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quadrivium I see

"The quadrivium was the upper division of the medieval education in the liberal arts, which comprised arithmetic (number in the abstract), geometry (number in space), music (number in time), and astronomy (number in space and time)." - so number has been recognised as being pretty basic for a while

It also includes doing the scientist’s scutwork (though not the actually
scientific scutwork, which for some reason or other seems to be biased
toward women operators). Someone at Corning may have been an amateur
astronomer, per accidens, but the Hale didn’t actually require an
astronomer once Corning had the specs.

I did the same thing in physics. And becausae he put extra credit
questions on his tests, I ended up with over 100% on my grade.

Only time he tested me, he asked what he'd just said, and repreated a
couple of minutes of the lecture back to him word for word. After
that, we got along fine.

Sheldon: (after several seconds of twitching) I have a working
knowledge of the important things in the universe.

Things get very blurry at the edges. I had a friend in engineering at Texas A&M who
was doing what I would call science, albeit with a practical application in mind. Nobody
would have batted an eye if he did this work in a chemistry department.

Long ago at U of Waterloo, two groups were using lasers and associated vacuum systems. The engineers simply bought theirs, and got on with the research. That was well beyond the financial powers of anyone in the physics department, so the student doing this research had to build it all himself. As a devout christian gentleman and all-round nice guy, he didn't swear, but if he had I'd
have learned some colourful Brazilian curses.
