https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2022/06/27/mystery-rocket-crashes-moon-leaves-large-double-crater/

A mystery rocket has crashed into the Moon, creating a large
double crater, leaving Nasa scientists baffled at who was
behind the launch and why its impact was spread over two
distinct areas.

No one on Earth has claimed responsibility for owning the
rocket, and Nasa cannot explain why the impact created two
craters when it crashed.

Whether it were Dos Tev, Cavor, Harriman or Napier there's a story there
somewhere..

My guess would be either China or India.

You can't trust the Telegraph. Can't trust Forbes either but they have
better chats with NASA.

And before that they were blaming SpaceX and the anti-Musk contingent
was shouting from the rooftops.

Dos Tev, deposed prince of Lemnis - Cosmos, joint effort of early fandom by
many later famous individuals
(Lemnis is in the Alpha Centauri system; Dos Tev establishes a base on the
Moon when he finds his opponents are planing to take over our system.)
Cavor - The First Men in the Moon, H. G. Wells
Delos D. Harriman - The Man Who Sold the Moon, Robert A. Heinlein
Carson Napier - Pirates of Venus, Edgar Rice Burroughs
(Carson Napier headed to Mars in a rocket, but ended up on Venus because
he neglected to take into account that his ship would have its path affected
by the Moon's gravity.)

It was initially thought to be a SpaceX second stage, later it was
found it couldn't be that but orbit a very good match for a chinese
launch, the Chang'e 5 T1's booster that was launched back in 2014.

The chinese then denied that it was the Chang'e 5's booster (launched
late 2020) and that it had burned up in the atmosphere.

The problem with this is that the Chang'e 5 is a DIFFERENT craft
launched many years later, the debris is suspected to be the booster
from the much earlier precursor mission (Chang'e 5-T1)!

There's independent confirmation that the Chang'e 5's (2020) booster
did burn up in Earths atmosphere so they're correct in that, it's not
relevant for the actual question.

So, did the T1 get dropped during translation to English and they're
really trying to assert the 5-T1 also burned up at some point?
Or did the T1 dropped earlier and they genuinely though people said it
was the Chang'e 5, not the 5-T1?
Or did someone in China deliberately choose to confuse the issue after
seeing the names were so close?

It's one of those "we just don't know".

Apparently the US Space Command has stated the 5-T1's booster didn't
reenter Earths atmosphere, and independent spectral analysis also
agrees that it was of Chinese origin (but not which stage it was).

So I think it's sufficiently confirmed to be treated as an established
fact, even if China still says it wasn't theirs. But their denial
isn't very impressive when it's about a different booster.
