Cascade (The Sleep of Reason, volume 1) by Rachel A. Rosen

https://jamesdavisnicoll.com/review/therell-be-happy-times

Unable to deal with climate change, the return of magic, and
internal divisions, the United States has disintegrated into
theocratic and techbro states. Canada on the other hand is
continuing business as normally as possible under the
circumstances, thanks to the Party's majority government.
Or to put it another way, disaster is bearing down on
a Canada whose faith in its ability to sit out disaster
is woefully misplaced.

So what's the plot of the novel? I liked your review anyway.
I've been wondering about the Canada origin story but didn't know
where to begin reading. The link to the Wikipedia page for
Family Compact was an eye-opener. So Canada grew out of
quasi-tribal jousting of prominent families, eh?

It's about an election, the effort to win it despite the Party leader
being a self-sabotaging dud, and the horrific consequences of losing
it to an Opposition that turns out to be very eager to exploit a
crisis. Features rampant ethnic cleansing towards the end.
