A novice SF author attends a surprisingly homicide-rich
science fiction convention.

I haven't read this, but I have read Richard Purtill's _Murdercon_,
where a novice SF author attends a science fiction convention that
features at least one murder (I read it back in the mid 1980s and while
I think I remember who the killer was, I don't remember anything about
the victim or victims).

Jay Omega? I know him; his pen-name is a mathematical pun that he'll explain if you don't stop him.

Ah, I read a second story involving him: _Zombies of the Gene Pool_: draining of a dam-made lake will re-expose the former "slan shack" of a group of fans. I don't remember it being too harsh on these people, who may or may not have gone on to other things. On the other hand, it did not send me to seek out this book mentioned on the cover.

There's also Asimov's _Murder at the ABA_.

Personally I found Bimbos rather mean spirited.

It was very much in the spirit of the SNL Star Trek "Get a life" skit.

As I haven't read it, I can't say if your comment is justified. However, I was
still tempted to reply something to the effect that "they can't all be"... Fallen
Angels, by Niven, Pournelle, and Flynn.

Mysteries are often written by people who aren't also SF authors - Isaac
Asimov was, in fact, a rare exception - and so that they might take an
outsider's view of SF fandom, which may well be unsympathetic...
and that adjective _can_ cover a lot; think of H. G. Wells' Martians.
