Alley Opp: Earth's Population in 2155

Nearly 100 billion people in 2155. No wonder why they are moving to
other time periods.

Nice.

Actually, the 'overpopulated Earth' thing is very overdone here. The current
median estimate is that population will peak around 10.2 billion in the 2080s,
then start declining. (Wikipedia).

There's a very noticeable drop in the birth rate when women get access to
effective birth control.

I actually checked the copyright date on this strip - it would have been the
general wisdom in 1972, but not in 2022.

Well, I thought Earth was crowded when we hit a billion people. And for
sure when we hit two billion.

Lynn

Texas sure is crowded nowadays. They are getting ready to build 34,000
new homes on 50 foot wide lots just a mile south of my house which is on
1.2 acres (162 foot wide by 315 foot deep).

You must be older than I am. I first became aware of the size of the Earth's
population when it was three billion, and that was considered large then.

Of course, the Green Revolution made it possible to feed a larger population.

It's true that the population of the wealthiest developed nations is declining.

Even so, _they_ consume resources at a rate that is unsustainable.

And the population of the world's poorer countries is still growing.

Nope, only 62. Exaggerating the population for fun. Earth hit one
billion in 1804.

In that case, you're not the only one exaggerating. So the world's
population is only about to hit eight billiion, rather than having been
10 billion for years.

Ten billion is an important number. That is how many people we grow
food for so we can afford to waste quite a bit of it.

However, that is coming to an end. Much of the world's fertilizer comes
out of Russia. And Germany (BASF). That is not happening this year due
to the war and the shortages of natural gas which most fertilizer is
made from. See the Bosch-Haber process for making ammonia from natural
gas. You swap the C for an N and drop an H. Don't smoke around the
reactor.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haber_process

Our stored food will last a while. Then things will get dicey. People
get violent when food is short.

Yes, and that's sad for the people who live in the parts of the world
that are threatened by the consequences of Russia's aggression
against Ukraine.

North America, of course, is not short of fertilizer or the wherewithal
with which to make it. Some of the Western industrialized world may
indeed end up paying higher prices to import food.
