I had known the name of Andrés Segovia, a master of the classical guitar,
who also participated in the training of many other notable guitarists.
I knew there was this other guy named John Williams who played guitar
but didn't write movie scores. (The movie score John Williams also plays
piano, and his piano playing, I recently learned, featured on the TV show
Peter Gunn, known for its use of Henry Mancini compositions.)

I had not been aware, though, that Charo was a talented classical guitarist:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmNPXqG6ovg

instead of simply a comedienne who worked with Bob Hope.

Now I've learned of *this* guy, here performing the same melody on the
Ed Sullivan show:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lxDQQDF6j0Y

Yes, that's Roy Clark.

Charo played on a cruise we went on many years ago. I had heard she was
pretty good. She was amazing. Yeah, she did the whole "Cuchi, Cuchi"
shtick, but then played the guitar. Wow! She was married to Xavier Cugat
who was quite a musician and arranger in his own right.

I saw Roy Clark at Tahoe once. He played the hell out of the guitar,
banjo, fiddle, and if I remember correctly the autoharp. There may have
been some piano in there too. He did the whole hick routine well, but he
played as well as anyone I've ever seen.

He's best known for the banjo (and has a playing style named after
him), but he was an amazing musician on a number of instruments. Most
of the Hee Haw gang were.

Seeing virtuosos of the classical guitar hide their light under a bushel
makes me wonder if that's a field with few opportunities and too
much competition.

Since you're knowledgeable about music, I will ask the obvious and
silly question: any relation to Earl?

Probably. Allegedly. We have not found a direct link, but his ancestors
and my ancestors came from the same area of the country. There aren't
that many Scruggs' around. I definitely didn't inherit any of his
musical ability.

So far, we haven't found a link to Joe Scruggs, a children's singer, or
Jan Scruggs, the driving force behind the Vietnam Memorial.

I have only met two people with the last name of Scruggs that were
outside of my extended. One was a woman in a dry cleaners in Oakland CA.
She was black. So if we were related, it goes WAY back. I never saw her
again.

The other was was a flight nurse who stepped out of a Stanford
Lifeflight helicopter to pick up a trauma patient we were cutting out of
a car. I never saw her again either.

Probably not much before the Civil War. Could be blood kin, could be
a freed slave who ended up with their former master's family name.

(Finding Your Roots had one buy who was about as black as human
beings get who found out he was qualified to join the Sons of the
Confereacy. They had quite a laugh ath the thought.)

Alex, I'll take "Celebrities named 'John Williams'" for $100.

Who was an English actor who appeared in (at least) two Hitchcock films,
as well as one with Bogie and Audrey Hepburn?

Ah, there is a third one... and apparently, you seem to be hinting, many
others.

I do remember one thing that confused me on Jeopardy during the tenure
of Alex Trebek. It seemed to me that they were declaring right answers
as wrong because of an unusual insistence on the precise meaning of
a word which is not normally used with such a precise meaning, at least
not in the United States.

If anyone asked me what country Edinburgh was in, I'd answer - the United
Kingdom. And if they asked me what _nation_ Edinburgh was in, I'd *still*
answer the United Kingdom, since the United Kingdom is a sovereign state,
and while it's true that to be Scottish or Welsh is to be of an ethnicity other
than English, calling Scotland a nation is... to wade into complex domestic
matters of the United Kingdom, and could even be construed as promoting
discord, separatism, or even sedition.

But according to Alex Trebek, I would be wrong - Scotland _is_ a nation,
and the United Kingdom is not. So I guess the United Kingdom is an empire
all by itself, without having to rule over India, let alone Australia and Canada.

About the only time I would ever feel the need to draw a distinctioin between
"nation" and "state" was if I was talking about John Cena or related matters.
Taiwan being the first sovereign state in which the latest installment of the
"Fast and Furious" series would be seen, of course it's entirely correct to
say it is the first _country_ to see it, since the meaning of "country" is vague;
it's only a _nation_ that Taiwan isn't, being at once an integral part of the
nation of China and not at all in any way whatsoever belonging to the
foreign sovereign state of the People's Republic of China.

It was very, very common for freed slaves to take on the family name
of their former masters.

It was also not uncommon for children of master and slave to do so.

Few black people in the US can trace their ancenstry back much
further than the Civil War.

UKofGB&NI is a multi-national state, with the constituent kingdoms,
and other bits and pieces containing at least one predominant national group.

Canada, Quaddie's home and native land - Trebek's also, before taking up
residence in California - was at least bi-national, but really multi-national,
given the divide between French and British, all the other immigrants from
all over the world, and the First Nations. [Also British being split between
multiple sub -groups. ]

There's a theory that the "US is the first universal nation"

[quote]

Now in _The Universal Nation_ [Ben]Wattenberg has reverted to type: discarding
the skies-are-falling mode, he argues that if all is not yet right with global
demographics, it will be with America’s. By his lights, the U.S. is well on its way
to becoming a demographic powerhouse, quantitatively to a degree, qualitatively
for certain. We are becoming the first polity in history to encompass within its
borders a cross-section of the entire world, a universe compressed within a
republic of 50 states.
