I think Dorothy said she was posting from a FreeBSD system, so vi(1)
is nvi2. When nvi2 runs into a character encoding error, it refuses
to process that line in any way. Yup, you can't delete it.

My webserver is a 64 bit FreeBSD system. I use vi on it with the dd
command all the time.

Do you ever have lines with character encoding errors?

The point wasn't that dd doesn't work, it was that the FreeBSD version of
vi doesn't honor dd when the line contains an encoding error.

Nope. At least none that I remember. I do have people putting unicode
into our response forms that I have to go in and delete sometimes. One
of these days I am going to update those forms to handle unicode. One
of these days.

A very long time ago (20+ years), somebody JoeJobbed my office manager.
I had to go into the email files and delete some 10,000 email bounces
using vi. Worked perfectly even though those emails were horribly
formatted.

I recall an incident many years ago... I think it was on
comp.unix.questions where someone posed a question and ended the
post with, "Don't tell me to RTFM if you WTFM." On that group
there was a real possibility that someone responding had written
not only the manual entry, but the underlying program as well.

A few years ago, when two cranes collapsed in downtown Seattle, the
suspicion on a newspaper comment board (or whatever it thought of
itself as being) that they had failed to RTFM turned out, upon
investigation, to be all too correct.
