From blurbs this appears standard fantasy fare although the 750 pages
includes 6 pages of complicated names of characters which made me
shudder enough to choose something else. Has anybody read it?

Aaargh. One generous star from me. I'm thankful that I have forgotten
details.

Exqueeze me? Have you never come across a fantasy novel with a Dramatis
Personae at the back? Never read a Sanderson, Abercrombie or even Tolkien?
Complicated names? Like Aragorn Elessar? Khaladin Stormblessed? Or is it that
the names are "eastern"?

Yes, I've read all three of the Green Bone Saga. They're among the better
fantasy I've read in the last few years, albeit its modernist fantasy set in
an apparently contemporary technology alt-world (jets, cell phones, internet)
which isn't always to people's tastes.

It is as complex and interesting as any other fantasy of recent times, with
contesting families trying to maintain both control over a limited magical
resource, with one foot in legitimate businesses.

Definitely not one to read without having read the previous two in the trilogy
though, its in no way a standalone.

On this we are agreed. I DNF'd this after about thirty pages.

Yes. I have but 6 pages seems an awful lot.

Yes. Both. A pet peeve has always been a complaint that Fantasy
characters have to have unusual names. Being eastern wouldn't matter to
me if the cast wasn't so large.

I was not aware it was not standalone before buying so am now doubly
pleased that I got no further than the character list. Thank you for
your opinions, overview and advice. I now have a copy of Jade City.
