Whoa, two for five here. "I am Legend" and "Remnant Population".

In Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker series, the real ruler of the
galaxy lives in a little shack on a planet with population
one. Sometimes people come and ask him questions, and then
go away. He doesn't believe in anything except what his
senses are currently telling him, so he stops believing in
them after they've left. When he's inside his shack, he
stops believing in the universe outside of it.

He has what could accurately be labelled a "detached point
of view."

Not just I am Legend. Every damn thing Matheson wrote was about being
alone.

Well, _A Stir of Echoes_ is - spoiler - about finding out
psychically what dreadful people your neighbours
may be. And "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" is about
unwanted company.

You know, there should be a Robert Heinlein book in this mix. Maybe
"Methuselah's Children".

I'm not seeing it. Unless you're saying that the 7,000 people on
board the hijacked starship all wanted to be alone together. In
fact, Heinlein's protagonists tend to be quite gregarious.

The only real loner of whom I can think was "the unwed mother",
who spent a lot of time with himself.

Doh! Waldo was a hermit, recluse, and loner.

The 7,000 escapees all wanted to not be dissected. They wanted to be
left alone.

+1. I forgot about him too.

Heinlein did not miss a trick, he covered ALL topics.

James's other doings pushed me to remind myself
(and to comment without putting in my name, again)
of <https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Literature/AndHeBuiltACrookedHouse>
within which story "Heinlein makes a brief allusion to
himself as the 'Hermit of Hollywood'", though I gather
elsewhere that being a hermit in the actual 21st century
doesn't exclude shopping in person for groceries.

At least I think that was mentioned in _The Hermit of Treig_
<https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0011hp3>, see also
<https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/entertainment/celebrity/highland-hermit-stuns-fans-glasgow-26400478>
which admittedly contradicts what I just claimed.
