Adams has been making noises about retiring, and perhaps going out in a blaze of
(self imagined) glory by being outrageous enough to be 'cancelled'. Since that time,
he's (very timidly) broached race, gender politics, and corona virus conspiracies.

Today’s Dilbert (https://dilbert.com/strip/2022-09-02) has Dilbert losing
‘Woke Points’. Adams is losing it. If he keeps this up, Dilbert will no
longer be on my daily comics reading list. (49 assorted comics, down from a
high of 63.)

Its deliberate. He's trying to offend people.

There's a bit of a tendency for self-made people, who don't answer to anyone, to
go off the rails and develop very non-mainstream views. Sometimes this is good,
sometimes its just weird.

I’m not offended. I just think that it’s stupid. It’s bad writing,
it’s not funny, and I read comics for amusement or for the story. If the
story is bad and it’s not funny, I see no reason to read the comic. I used
to read Prince Valiant and The Phantom and Dick Tracey, for example... until
the story got bad, bad, bad, and I bailed and haven’t been back. 6 Commando
didn’t update for 18 months. I bailed.

if he wants to deliberately reduce his readers, well, he can. It’ll work.
But in at least my case it won’t be because I’m offended, it’ll be
because I no longer give a damn about his work.

You could definitely call some of his views, say on free-will, non-mainstream.

His view here though is probably held by about half the country. That
doesn't mean it's right, but it's not fringe.

That's a lot. But I don't read Friday's one as offensive,
just trivial. The Company - and its Director of Human
Resources, for it is (as far as I know) he - are in fact
not human, and whatever they do for, or usually to,
employees, is not for human benefit. And it's
"wokeness score", by the way.

My read of "woke" generally is "to recognise prejudice",
so the contrary position is to refuse to recognise
prejudice. I am pleased when people declare themselves
against wokeness, because it saves ever so much time
that you might spend forming a judgement of their character.

My read of "woke" generally is "a method (with diminishing returns) to
manipulate the sheep by crying victim-hood".

Most of the time it isn't even a funny one either.

Unfortunately it's the only one in The New Zealand Herald newspaper (in
the Business News section!) apart from the daily single frame cartoon
that is based on current events.

It is true that a view used to be called a "fringe" view if a small group of
people, on the edge of the curve, shared it.

But when views, formerly held only by the lunatic fringe, have started to be
held by half the country, thanks to Donald J. Trump, what new name can
we give those views, since they're still as unreasonable and unsound as
ever?

Indeed. I understood "woke" to mean: someone who understands the
situation that black people face. That is a good thing, not a bad thing.

As with most things, it seems to mean whatever one wants to think it
means.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woke

"By 2020, parts of the political center and right wing in several
Western countries were using the term woke, often in an ironic way,
as an insult for various progressive or leftist movements and ideologies
perceived as overzealous, performative, or insincere. In turn, some
commentators came to consider it an offensive term with negative
associations to those who promote political ideas involving identity
and race. By 2021, woke had become used almost exclusively as a slur,
with most prominent usages of the word taking place in a disparaging context."

Popular fallacy, but not new, of course.

Ah. Created by racists to defend racism, particularly embedded
systemic racism. Also sexism, homophobia and similar indefensible
perversions. Which means that those creating it are not only racists,
sexists, and homophobes but race-traitors as well.

I would be interested in an explanation of why Adams is not to be celebrated in stereotypical phrases such as "pushing the limits of artistic freedom" and "opening up new horizons of discourse" that doesn't build down to "this time we don't like the artist's politics"

My understanding is that Adams's popularity has allowed him to stay in touch with fashions in multinational corporations from second hand reports even after leaving one himself. I find the picture of an organisation keen enough on the various things that counts as corporate social responsibility to feed the employee's contribution to this into their salary calculations entirely plausible, though hopefully Adams is exaggerating in making it the only factor concerned.

But mostly perpetrated by middle-class white people and almost never
about actual prejudice.

An example from comic-book land. A few years ago Marvel made Ice-man(a
founding member of the X-men) gay. And they put out press releases about
it and managed to even get it on some national news. So was that a great
blow struck for Gay rights? No, it was an attempt to create a
controversy to bump up sales, let the people involved post on tweeter
about how great they were for doing it and try to ward off the backlash
by getting out front of it by saying anyone who did not like the change
was homophobic. The problem was that Ice-man had a forty year
history(with thought bubbles describing how much he liked girls) of being
a skirt chaser so no amount of insults were able to stop the backlash and
now Ice-man is sales poison(putting him on a cover actually drops
sales). That is Woke.

Once again, could you please define your terms? You seem to pull out
the term "racism" whenever you feel the need to insult someone -
there's been no coherent meaning that can be ascertained. For
instance, I have not been able to see how your definitions of "racism"
and "systemic racism" can possibly be compatible with each other.

Here, the people you are insulting are blacks and liberals. "Woke" was
created by blacks, made widespread by blacks post-Ferguson, widely
adopted by liberals, and only then became a pejorative term when used
by conservatives and then afterwards some liberals describing some over-the-top
actions they didn't support.

Vox published a nice history of it:

The globe and mail (Canada) replaced the excellent British strip "Alex" with
Dilbert just as Dilbert became unfunny. Alex is still going, still more relevant
to business than Dilbert (takes place in a merchant bank) and still funny.

I saw a few episodes of the Dilbert TV series, which were pretty funny. Espeically when the company desperately needs a COBOL program rewritten, and Wally is the only employee with expertise in that language.

Welcome to my world. Dilbert vanished circa 2000, replaced by a doppelganger which isn't often
funny.

I miss it.
