How can somebody remember that much detail about a story and
yet not recall where it was published?

Since Wolffan said that it made the cover of MF&SF, I don't quite see
why you're saying they don't recall where it was published.

A preposition is something you should never end a sentence with.

Easily.

I plowed through the libraries collection of SciFi when I was in
the 8th grade.
I remember plots & characters. Titles? Authors? Not so well.

I suppose you remember where you were when you
read it - the planet Oceanus or whatever, I expect.

I remembered the cover, I remember approximately when I read it and where I
read it: I borrowed it from the county library when I was in university. That
put an upper limit on when it was published, as I got too busy to borrow SF
mags from the library during my junior and senior years. The magazine was in
excellent condition, which put a lower limit on when the library got it.

And very few paser pistols are named ‘Esmerelda’.

I thought I might have had it with "The Ark of Humanity" by
Scott Toney, but no, it isn't old enough.

I would accept "phase pistols" or "phasers".

Tools of casual violence are dehumanising, and
perhaps not quite the right way to address that is
<https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ICallItVera>

Which states that the legendary Davy Crockett
owned three guns named Betsy and many a
!fictional person who "either has a sentimental
attachment to said weapon, is a veteran from
some war, is a major Gun Nut, is a person who
lost their love and still remembers them, is
generally insane, or is some combination of the
above", does similarly. I think I read a lot of
"The Saint" stories where I think Hoppy Uniatz's
firearm "Betsy" was more often used as a club to
inflict survivable head injury.

By then, I had read every single book in the appropriate section of
the local public library.

And, when they insisted I could not read anything else, I discovered
-- used book stores.

I can't say I never returned to the public library -- but a cord was
definitely broken and I never used them as a primary resource for
fiction again.

Didn't either Buck Godot and/or one of his rivals have named

In _Buffy the Vampire Slayer_ another Slayer casually refers
to her stake as "Mr. Pointy." Buffy stares at her in incredulity

Our local library system had rules dictating what could be checked out based
on age, but no equivalent rules about what sections one could browse in. I
chose the books from the adult section, took them to the front desk and my mom
dropped her card on top of the stack.
I eventually exhausted the supply anyway and began begging the parents for
book money (mostly for new books...no decent used stores anywhere close).

I can recall several Philip K Dick books in great detail yet have no
clue on the publication data. (I get as close as "early 60s" for
publication date without having to look things up)
