I just finished reading C. L. Moore's _Judgment Day_, which features
the downfall of the human race, and a view of a potential successor
species.

The polity ruling humanity is sometimes referred to as "Lyonese".

Knowing that Jack Vance had a series referred to as "Lyonesse", I
did some searching to see if there was any connection between the
two.

First hit when searching for Vance's spelling gave me a wikipedia
article that says that Lyonesse is a part of Arthurian myth (thus
predating Vance by a couple of years) and that the land so named
sank in a single night due to the wrath of God.

Since we do see that last night (the eponymous "Judgment Night")
for humanity, it seems likely that Moore wrote this with just that
event in mind.

I'm not sure what my point is here, but I found it to be an
interesting connection. (Unlike the story, which I didn't much
care for.)

I always found it a bit interesting that Vance's "Lyonesse" did not
address the sinking issue at all. Going in I figured it would follow
the Atlantis rule such as if you set a story there, it has to end
catastrophically.

So, Disney's /Atlantis/ is an exception?

Hmm. I think it was already post-catastrophe when they got there in that
one..

And it wasn't exactly an HEA anyway.

But, yeah. Pretty much an exception.

I believe that there have been stories set in an sunken Atlantis,
inhabited by merfolk (who might had been descended from the
pre-catastrophe population).

A surviving sunken Atlantis may still be in for further
disasters. And when adventure heroes go anywhere,
usually something happens. Merfolk may be affected
by the pollution, or if Atlantis survives by a hastily
constructed all-enclosing roof, further trouble still
may ensue.

I'm sure that since counter-examples exist, though.
But for repeated visits by the same heroes, I would say
that a kind of marine Godwin's Law applies.
