Destinies, April-June 1979 (Destinies, # 3) edited by Jim Baen

Another tour of an issue of Destinies, a short-lived but fondly remembered Disco Era SF magazine.

For some reason, the phrase "paperback magazine of science fiction"
makes me think of Damon Knight's _Orbit_ series. Of course, he
didn't have essays and reviews.

After Knight discovered Orbit sales were declining, he did add
some new departments, including (in 14) book reviews. Didn't help
sales.

There were book reviews in New Worlds Quarterly, as well. I can recall a pity one
by M. John Harrison in reviewing Joseph Green's "The mind behind the eye" which
got a favourable review by the times:

"The Times is easily amused".

Alas I'd already bought it.

Teen me liked Conscience Interplanetary, which led me to read
other Green novels I enjoyed less.

I never saw a copy of that, but I think I liked his "The Loafers of Refuge". I was about thirteen at the time and recall nothing of it now.

"I am a little surprised (but only a little) that Anderson states that
if he had a time machine and could erase either Woodrow Wilson’s
presidency or Baby Hitler, he’d opt for the first."

World War II was made inevitable by the treaty that ended WWI.
Removing Baby Hitler might put a sane Fuehrer into office.

I'd have to read up on Wilson before forming an opinion.

Without Wilson, the Treaty of Versailles would be different,
perhaps even better. No US involvement in WWI, and the "Great War"
ends in a stalemate? Or Teddy Roosevelt wins a second term in 1916
and who knows what happens?

Uh, no. Wilson was the primary advocate of a more equitable peace. The
punishment provisions towards Germany would have been even worse without
Wilson.

The US was going to get involved. The Germans would do something that
would finally push the country into it. Teddy would have done it within
days of being sworn in if he won in 1916.

"History Matters" (which seems generally level-headed to me), suggests
that the provisions of the treaty were not unusually harsh:

They might not have had the time. We came in pretty late anyway.
If they had held off on some of their bone-headed moves, they might
have lost first.

For the times that is true. Wilson was still the one pushing "we can be
better than that", which in hindsight might have made a huge difference
in the 40 or so years after.

Maybe. But they had already pulled two or three bone-headed moves that
almost drew the US into the war. With the increasing desperation as
they were starving I have trouble seeing the German leadership become
more circumspect in trying to turn things around.

Removing Adolf Hitler (doesn't have to be Baby Hitler, he could be
killed in WWI or be a Spanish Influenza fatality) might not help the
post-WWI situation in Germany. There were a lot of crazies and several
nationalist or even nativist parties in Germany. After all, Himmler,
Goebbels, Rohm and others are still around.

Stone cold racist (he might had been governor of New Jersey, but he was
raised in Georgia and South Carolina).

Of course, I suppose one could write a story where someone goes back
in time, eliminates Hitler with the *expected* result...

and then the world is destroyed by global warming, because nuclear
power was never invented.

Now, if one could go back in time so as to eliminate some other Austrian,
so that Austria decides to leave Serbia alone, so there's never a World
War I, and hence no Bolshevik Revolution, and we get a world something
like the one in charge in Keith Laumer's novels of parallel worlds... not
everyone would agree that such a world would be an improvement, but
it would certainly be more peaceful.

Wilson was Special. Wilson kicked blacks out of the Federal civil service.
Wilson encouraged Jim Crow, particularly in DC. Wilson was big on
‘self-determination’ for ‘all peoples’... for all peoples who
weren’t black or brown, that is. Wilson was, probably, the most racist
president that the US has had to date. Given the competition, that’s quite
a feat. Seriously, Wilson made Churchill look like a standard-bearer for
racial equality, something quite difficult to achieve.

Did Robert Heinlein ever express any opinion, favorable or unfavorable,
about Woodrow Wilson? Lazarus Long, one of the protagonists of his
_Future History_ series, was born in 1912 and his original given name
was Woodrow Wilson Smith, named after the then president elect. Long's
mother Maureen was consistently shown as a decent and liberal person.

Has anyone ever pinpointed the optimum time to kill Hitler?
Sometime after his infancy, to be more morally acceptable,
and before Valkyrie showed how difficult it would be.

Turns out nailing him in his bunker in 1945 is surprisingly doable.
The trick is to make it look like suicide.

Growing up in early 20th century Kansas City Misery would have inculcated
racism into RAH at an early age. It's not clear how much of that remained
into his later years.

I would suggest the 1923 putsch attempt. People around him died, so it wouldn't look suspicious. From the morality pov, he was fronting a rebellion and was thus responsible for some deaths. There was no Nazi leader to replace him. Goering did not inspire trust and was about to fall into addiction, Hess was a nobody, Ludendorff not a politician. At this point Goebbels was still more or less an actual socialist. Didn't join the party until 1924.

Alternately an allied shell could be aimed slightly differently in 1917, as in the Fry novel. But at this point he hasn't earned it.

Sometime during his service in WWI. He had a dangerous job: runner for a
front-line battalion. One more dead corporal in a Bavarian regiment
wouldn’t be noticed.
