Or just watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Gc4QTqslN4

But The Trashmen didn't originate it either. The Rivingtons did:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Gc4QTqslN4
Reportedly, the band decided to cover it on Billboard, and Steve Wahrer,
(drummer/vocalist) discovered he'd forgotten most of the lyrics. He
proceeded to adlib with the little he remembered, making the song we
know today.

Its amazing how many younger people think the song originates
in much later The Family Guy cartoon.

There seems to be a common trope of people mistaking a much
later performance/cover for the original. I've seen it happen with,
for example, people who think Kylie Minogue was the original
singer of 'The Locomotion', only to be floored when they see Little
Eva's performance.

The best version is still Grand Funk!

I'm guessing that over the years the Rivingtons have made more money
from the Beach Boys' cover on their first live album (a gold record
which still sells) than their own recording. The band also dropped
the chorus into other songs such as "Barbara Ann" from time to time
up into, at least, the 2012 reunion tour.

Little Eva's version sounds best, though Kylie's is nice to look at.

The Crew Cuts didn't do "Sh-Boom" first.
Thee Chords' original also charted, as did the
Stan Freberg record.
