Can't believe I never heard of these...

https://www.google.com/search?rlz=1CAJMBU_enUS1022&tbm=vid&q=peanuts+ford+1959&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiO_-6ajYP6AhUrq4kEHSeaBTkQ8ccDegQIBhAH&biw=1517&bih=734&dpr=0.9

I found them when I was searching for commentaries about the chocolate cigars - and Snoopy.

(As in, 60 years ago and more, pretty much NO one knew that chocolate was dangerous to dogs. It wasn't just Schulz; even people who should, in theory, have known better - such as the author of the Encyclopedia Brown series - didn't know. My guess is that back then, Americans were more thrifty in general, so they wouldn't have dreamed of wasting candy on pets, and so vets had relatively little evidence of what was bad for dogs and didn't "need" to make constant warnings to the public.)

My memory is that our dog ate (stolen) chocolate many times with
no seeming ill effect. Of course she ate wallpaper paste and soap
as well. Maybe dogs were just sturdier back then..

The last commercial in this YouTube block features a Peanuts Ford commercial done by Rick Reinert and not Bill Melendez studios: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fk66CPPHM_s&t=55s

We never had a dog, so I can go only by ads I remember, but I believe
there was such a thing as chocolate candy for dogsā€”of course, Lord knows
what was actually in it.

More likely it's about the size of the dog, the type of chocolate, and the amount.

My current dog has stolen a lot of chocolate from my teenagers. She has never gotten sick. I am sure it affects some dogs, but mine has a cast iron stomach. Once it was one of those chocolate oranges - ate the whole thing and left the wrapper behind. Just this week, she ate a large, unopened chocolate bar that my daughter forgot to put away. Again, left the wrapper behind and not a sign of distress.
