The Path of Unreason by George O. Smith

James Carroll is merely the latest physicist to go mad studying
Lawson radiation, his conviction that he is being persecuted by
aliens merely another manifestation of derangement. Or is it?

Ah! When you said you'd had a theory that turned out to be Dead On Arrival, I thought you'd bury it. Thanks for putting it on display.

I don't have _Worlds of George O_ anymore, but there was a story in there he said he crafted to submit to Campbell to reopen communication with him (I think after Campbell's second marriage.) From ISFDB, I'm guessing it would be "History Repeats" (1959), although there is also a radio script adaptation of 1947's "Meddler's Moon" for the 1958 season of "Exploring Tomorrow" for whatever influence Campbell had on that show beyond narration. If "History Repeats" is the story I'm thinking of, we can all point to the psionics, but Smith's notes add the lesser known fact that Campbell was a dog person.
