So real life gets real busy, and you realize with some small alarm
that you've hardly read any books, or even kept tabs on usenet,
for the better part of two months.

What do you do? You take aim at both deficiencies by reading
Sagara's Cast in Shadow (very good, will read more!) and then
hop on rasfw to ask:

What are you reading now? I'm hoping to start Kurtz's "The Adept"
later today, and I'm almost finished with Sheffield's collection
"The Compleat McAndrew" (uneven, but the good stuff is really good).

So what are you reading?
- Tony

I'm just a few pages from the end of _The Tolkien Reader_[1], which is
a mixture of short stories, essays, and poems. The poems are bundled
together under the title _The Adventures of Tom Bombadil and Other
Verses from the Red Book_.

Tolkien provided a preface to these poems, in which he discusses the
(sub-created) provenance of each. As I was reading this preface, it
occurred to me that it had a similar nature to Asimov's thiotimoline
stories[2], in that each of them was applying the techniques of his
real-world academic specialty to stuff he'd made up.

I have just finished reading the 2nd book in Haskell's "Grimm's War" series.. I found it more similar to the first book in the series than I would really like, but still entertaining. I don't want to buy books more often than I think sensible, so I am currently re-reading Melissa Scott's "Fair's Point" - love her novels of Astreiant, and have read them multiple times. I expect to buy the 3rd Grimm's War book eventually.

I'm currently finishing the final volume of Nuttall's Magic School
series (25 of 25). Enjoyable series, if a bit derivative at first.

Kurtz's Adept series is one of my regular re-reads every few years.

I am reading _The Patchwork Realms_. A dog gets transmigrated to a
fantasy/LitRPG universe where he gains enhanced intelligence and
access to the "system". It's a "dog-eat-dog" world, which leads to
various misadventures.

It's reasonably well written and the "intelligent dog who is still a dog
at heart" protagonist is interesting at first. Unfortunately, it gets a
bit repetitive after the first dozen chapters.

There's "a smart dog is still a dog" in Alanson's _Convergence_, and again
a bit goes a long way.

I try to summarize what I've read in posts titled "RI in some month".
I suppose the title could be less acronmymic. Right now I am reading
the final book in Buroker's Dragon Gate Series: _Sky On Fire_. I haven't
finished it, but briefly if you like her in general, I would skip the
first four books, infer the backstory without having to slog through it,
and enjoy the denoument.

Also, I'm closing in on the end of the "Water Seven" arc of "One Piece"
(vols 44/45) wherein unforeseen and bizarre events complicate what was
supposed to be a simple port stop for the Straw Hats to get their beloved
ship repaired. I'll admit my vision was inexplicably blurry during the
final chapter of vol 44.

All that I've read of Sheffield is the first few novels in the Heritage
Universe[1]. I see that the McAndrew stuff[2] is a rather large series
(or common setting).

What's it like/what's it about?

In my case, it's "hearing" rather than "reading" - Perry Rhodan #144
"The Robot Invitation" by Scheer.
Audiobooks allow me to multi-task. They add a soundtrack to my dog
walks and mountain bicycle spins. It's easy to digest one and a half
Perry Rhodan novellas per day.
A Text To Sound (TTS) process enables me to create an audiobook from
any text. (The technical details will soon be published on my website.)
Listeners can choose the computer narrator they want to hear. A male
voice works best for me. He doesn't "ham it up" either.

_Raising Steam_ by Terry Pratchett. But it feels

I recently finished Alastair Reynolds latest Revelation Space universe book "Inhibitor Phase". Then I read Seanan McGuire's newet Toby Daye offering "Be the Serpent".

Now I'm reading something much older: "The Haunting of Hill House" by Shirley Jackson.

I'm catching up (I will never catch up). Finally read "Leviathan Wakes" (not, as I had hoped
a novel about the resurrection of William Cecil, but good nonetheless) and am moving
forward in the Laundry series.

Yeah, I keep trying to figure out where to start with her -- I think

It's 9 stories followed by a decent sized appendix (almost 50 pages).
I've read 8 of the stories, and 4-5 of them are very good. They're the
types of space/science-oriented puzzle stories that Asimov and Clarke
occasionally wrote. McAndrew is an Einstein-level genius who just
wants to do his research at a government funded institute in space.
The stories are told from the point of view of pilot/companion/colleague,
Jeanne Roker. At the start of story #1, the solar system is pretty well
explored and colonized, and humanity is on the cusp of being able to
explore farther.

There's a 2-3 story arc that I could have done without, but the rest have
been very enjoyable.

I've enjoyed all 8 I've read and I'm very much looking forward to reading
#9 when I get the chance.

Ah, my bad - I assumed you meant Lee Hoffman

Thanks for the clarification

Well, not with this series I would say. It feels like she was trying
for something bigger than usual, and not quite landing it. I would say

above and start "The Emperor's Edge" with "Beneath The Surface" which
I found worked very well for me.
