No, Hasbro has not decided to break the Reprint Policy.

However, to celebrate 30 years of Magic: the Gathering, they are now
producing another product similar to the Collector's Edition.

This new product involves reprints of the Power Nine and the dual
lands and so on, but with a non-standard card back, so these cards
are not tournament legal.

I just heard about it from YouTube the other day.

However, the product is being sold in the form of fancy boxes
which contain four booster packs of these cards, that sell for

$999.00 each.

No, that is not a misprint. One dollar less than a thousand.

I'd call this a money grab, except I don't seriously believe that
anyone would be crazy enough to buy one. (Well, one YouTube
personality actually did buy one, but presumably the money he
makes paid for it.)

At least, it's hard for me to imagine that enough people would
buy this instant collector's item to make it profitable. Not even
remotely. Perhaps I'm just underestimating the amount of people
with more money than sense, or I haven't realized how far inflation
has gone these days.

Could the spread of news like this actually /drive/ inflation?

I don't understand economics, but if, as they say, inflation is too much money chasing after too few goods, it may go the other way.

My thinking is that this is a one-time event, and will not add to (even if distracting from) a general increase in the price of collectible cards. Assuming a Magic: the Gathering player has a fairly constant supply of money to spend, will lower spending on what;s in the "basket" of goods and services used to calculate official inflation. I'm guessing this effect will be small, like the effect on the savings rate of the state quarters. (Imagine all those people who now have $12.50 stashed away!)
