I suppose it's all relative. At 70 now, that makes him about 3.5
years younger than I am.

I am 62 and feeling 70 today. Our ten year old clothes washer in the
laundry room off the kitchen shorted out today and left the cold water
valve wide open. I looked in the kitchen while I was talking to my
wife and saw waves. I looked again and realized that the kitchen had an
inch of water in it and carefully ran into laundry room where I
disconnected the washer. So we spent most of the day cleaning up
everything. I did not know that you could stand at the back door of the
kitchen and sweep the water out but I know that now. We now have a new
Speed Queen TC5 clothes washer, I bought the last one in Houston
available up in Tomball, 48 miles from my house.

I've been there, but I ended up buying a wet/dry shop vac to part the
sea on the back porch. I dread the thought of when my current appliances
start dieing as new ones are nowhere near as good.

With the greatest of respect there's only one way to avoid getting
older one day at a time and I do not recommend that for quite a while
yet.

(And I speak as one in the same position as Hal though my worst day of
2022 was in early March)

I doubt either of us have gotten over those worst days yet. I
know I certainly haven't. So...one day at a time it is. To keep
promises I made, I need to keep doing that for 235 more months.

The wife was actually using the broom out the back door and I ran to get
the wet / dry vac. No major damage.

For sure. I was in the next room "attending" our municipal council's
meeting (by Zoom) and had spoken in the public input session at the
start of the meeting. I went for a medical checkup 6 weeks later
though most of the time was spent him quizzing me on symptoms seen
before her death and among other things telling me that even had >HE<
been in the same room at the time that he thought it would be 50/50 at
best if he could have saved her and much less had HE been elsewhere in
the house so he very much doubted somebody with just the basic St
John's Ambulance certificate could have helped much. (Which was a
relief since knowing one had been speaking at Council while one's wife
was dying in the next room would be an impossible cross to bear)

I'm not sure what you mean by 235 months but assume that's 20 years
less 5 months - which would be realistic for me as well but somehow I
hope to surpass that.

Financially I'm fine - but that's not the thing that's most missing.

I'm always confused about the spelling of that town,
because I mishear/misread it as "Tompall," after the
late Tompall Glaser.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tompall_Glaser

Besides liking roots rock, punk and New Wave, I've always
been fond of country and western.

Alice felt even more indignant at this suggestion. "I mean," she

There are a lot of very dark jokes in AiW and TtLG.

It is, and I was a month off. Should have been 236 months to go.
I promised to take care of the cats for the rest of their lives
(they're about 2.5 now) and see the grandchildren grown (the
youngest is about 19 months now). So 20 years from her death is
the target, by which time I'll be 93. I have enough ancestors
that made it into their 90s, so I have a not unreasonable chance.

>Financially I'm fine - but that's not the thing that's most missing.

Likewise, especially since the bulk of our joint income was mine.
Hers pretty much paid her medical insurancce and minor odds and
ends, so without the associated expenses it comes out about even.
Income taxes will go up some, though, but not for this year.

We just bought a new house and one of the features I really like is that
the laundry room floor is recessed about an inch and there is a drain
that leads outside.

My parents once had a house where the laundry room was directly below
the hallway with the bedrooms and had a small door just outside my
bedroom door where you could stick your clothes for washing and have
them fall directly into the laundry basket.

My present home is laid out the same way so we COULD have the laundry
tub directly below the hallway but don't.

Laundry chutes aren't that rare.

The house we've been living in for the last 30 years has a laundry
chute in the main bedroom that drops the clothes right into a big
plastic tub sitting on a table next to the washer and dryer.

When we were looking at houses and toured this one, that was a
actually a major selling point for me. I mean, yeah, it's a fairly
small house and the lower part of the back yard floods on a regular
basis but, hey - I'm not carrying dirty laundry downstairs.

In old construction, sure. In new construction? Particularly
with a preponderance of single-story homes built on slabs
in certain highly populated corners of the country?
