The Devil Wives of Li Fong by E. Hoffman Price

Astonished apothecary's apprentice Li Fong is wooed by two
beautiful, wealthy women. Li Fong would be even more surprised
if he knew what he had married.

I know I read this at the time; I remember the cover. But I have absolutely no recollection of the story, even after reading the review.

It is certainly true that both Chinese and Japanese women tend
to be both short and slim, and, as well, have what can be described
as a paedomorphic appearance to European eyes.

Thus, those who fetishize one will likely fetishize the other.

Also, when you referred to him as "a product of the pulp era", this
piqued my curiosity. The page on him at Fantastic Fiction,

https://www.fantasticfiction.com/p/e-hoffmann-price/

mentions that he was born in 1898, and lists only a few older
works by him, the novella _Spanish Vampire_ (1939) and
the short stories _The Rajah's Gift_ (1925), _The Sultan's Jest_
(1925), _The Word of Bentley_ (1933), and three other short
stories co-authored with Otis Adelbert Kline, who, of course,
is quite well-known here.

There's also a non-fiction piece about Lovecraft from 1949. But
it seems as if his literary career blossomed _after_ the world
was supposed to have "known better"; perhaps he just faced
less competition.

Quadi, Quadi. When will you learn that there are people who know much
more than you on various subjects?* I happen to have a near 600 page
book of his short stories, almost all of which were published before
WWII (most in _Weird Tales_, but _Spicy Mystery Stories_ and _Argosy_
were mentioned as well). For that matter, why didn't you check the ISFDB
which has a long list of his stories (most of which have pre-1950
publication dates).

*From years of experience reading responses to your posts, I can
confidently declare "Never".

1. Fantastic Fiction, rather than the ISFDB, was what turned up in my
Google search.

2. That he could have had stories I didn't see listed on that page was
indeed a possibility I considered. In fact, later on, I did find that he
collaborated with a third author, besides Otis Adelbert Kline and
H. P. Lovecraft, and that he was a regular contributor to Weird Tales.

Ah, Clark Ashton Smith, and that was right on the Fantasic Fiction page.

But I didn't think it was necessary to issue a correction on such a point.

I was going to mention that having a Chinese man visualize paradise as
involving Chinese women might simply mean that the story was given an
exotic setting, and really didn't have to involve fetishization of Asian
women, but I held off on that as well, as being kind of obvious.

"All" is too encompassing to me (I have not plumbed the full extent of
Quadi's ignorance; I don't want to risk missing the possiblity that
Quadi actually knows something about one, not known to us, subject). I
probably should have used "most".

Well, that's part of your problem. You should have looked at ISFDB,
FIRST!

On my web site,

http://www.quadibloc.com/

you can see an assortment of topics that I rashly *think*
I know, or at least could look up, a little bit about.
