Better chance of survival these days than in decades past...
Still, I did it a bit better. Got the bypass surgery without
having a heart attack first.

I did not know that was even _possible_! (By that, I don't mean that
it wouldn't be possible to perform the surgery, but rather that such
surgery would be in any way helpful under that circumstance.)

A myocardial infarction is caused by obstructions in the coronary arteries
that supply blood to the heart muscle. A simple angiogram can
determine the degree of obstruction and lead to a recommendation
for a bypass operation (a.k.a. membership in the zipper club) prior
to the occurance of an M.I.

From hazy memories of my father's surgery, it's not that the surgery would
be unhelpful, it's knowing that it needs to be done. Narrowed coronary
arteries tend to be asymptomatic until they block. At that point, assuming
one survives, tests are run to identify the blockages and what needs to be
done to remediate them.
In my father's case he was having surgery for a failed valve (likely from
rheumatic fever as a child) and they ran a full set of tests before the
surgery. They did one bypass and two stents at the same time they did the
valve replacement. It bought him another 20+ years.

Pretty easy, actually. I was having symptoms of angina.
Cardiologists did an angiogram and found some pretty bad
blockages. I was told, "We operate or you'll be dead in six
months." That was in March 2000.

Good to hear.

I had a heart attack in 2009 caused by high blood pressure. Found out
that I do not have a right coronary artery, a congenital heart defect.
I am not a good candidate for a bypass but, my left coronary artery is
the size of my pinkie finger since it is so large to compensate. I do
have occasional angina in the right side of my heart but, not much we
can do since the back side of my heart is totally dead.

I figure that some day, maybe soon, my heart will make James, Alan, and
Titus fairly happy.

I did have a double heart ablation in 2018 to stop my constant atrial
fibrillation tachycardia after the drugs stopped working. Worked like a
champ.

Do you suppose that would have happened in 1973? I've wondered
since then whether my father got adequate treatment. He complained
of chest pains on a Sunday. I took him to the hospital the next
day. He died on Thursday, in the ICU no less.

The first angioplasty was performed on a live patient in 1977.

By the way, that's for "coronary angioplasty".

It doesn't say, but I think things like this are tried
out on animals first - and they don't have to be sick.

My father died of a heart attack in 1975. I suspect that you are
correct. The diagnostic procedure was developed in the 1920s,
and applied to the heart in the 1950s, but I don't know how
common it was in the 1970s.
