I am shocked, SHOCKED! to hear of intrusive exposition in a science fiction story.

I had not seen the word "metrophage" before, but from what I know of classical
languages it would seem to mean something that eats cities, which is of course
a familiar science fiction trope, i.e. Godzilla.
