Was it a pre-occupation (ie, they paid attention to it), or did they just
ignore it? The Mutant Queen Victoria's hemophilia certainly seemed
to spread well.

Assuming the gene started with Victoria, it lasted just over a century, with the last
known carrier dying in 1934.

It's possible the mutation was present in Victoria's mother. But there is no sign of it
in her daughter by her first marriage, though, or in any of that daughter's descendants.

Was Victoria's hemophilia somehow unique? My father had matrilinear
hemophilia. (Passed down from mother to daughter but only manifested in
male offspring and not passed down from them.)

Pretty standard, if perhaps a bit weak. Some of her hemophiliac descendants
lived a comparatively long time.

Male hemophiliacs cannot pass the disease on to their sons but their daughters will all be carriers

Owing to a process called Lyonization in which one of a pair of genes on a woman's x chromosomes is
suppressed a female carrier may be low in clotting factor if it is the undamaged gene that is inactivated.

IIRC this never results in full blown hemophilia, but the woman in question will bruise easily and cuts will
heal slowly.

Until recently male sufferers almost never lived to have children. An exception occurred in a Swiss valley, where a
comparatively mild mutation allowed men to live into their forties. As a result this valley
had a number of female hemophiliacs but luckily this mutation seems to be extinct.
