Well, you have to think historically that there have been a number of
murders using the setups from murder mysteries, but without the critical
mistake that let the detective solve it..

I haven't played with ChatGPT much, but in my experience, no, it
won't work that way. Instead, it will lecture you on how violence is
never the answer, and imply you need psychiatric treatment. (And
that's asking question in a specifically gaming context).

I dunno. If you're self employed, and asking questions like that,
seems to be to be much less of a problem.

I don't know if ChatGPT has ethics. Someone said
on BBC that it has no actual knowledge, it just puts
together words in a pleasing arrangement. And so it
tells you what you want to here.

Leaving that aside, a lot of this is in "A Logic Named Joe".
But, again, with no ethical filter.

From my playing around, it appears to identify the central theme of
your request - fairly reliably - and then regurgitates a handful of
generic facts about it. Nothing obscure, nothing deep, certainly
nothing new or original. All regurgitation.

Sounds perfect for written text homework, then.

For what is written text homework but ... regurgitation?

Or essay questions on tests, for that matter?

It's being used increasingly for just that, especially at the
college level.

Also, it is apparently also suitable for writing papers for peer
reviewed journals.

"hear", dammit.

I suspect it won't reliably identify actual facts.
Make that "texts", perhaps.

I've been seeing web pages for years whose source
appears to be this sort of thing, and it's annoying when
what you want is a thoughtful informative article
written by a human being.

There's also a concern of copyright of text that gets
scooped up into this process and spat out.

Good point. There have been comments from people using it to write
articles to the effect that they have to edit it a fair amount to
remove errors. Which sounds like more work than actually writing the
article.

IIRC, I saw (but didn't read) an article suggesting that some schools
are going back to pen-and-paper tests to avoid the problem.

One wonders when they will reach the "goose quills and liquid ink"
stage ...

Depending on the subject, that is probably no surprise.

At which point, somebody will start selling goose quills with WiFi
built in.

Given the sorry state of peer reviewed journals the last few
decades, having an AI write papers might actually improve the
quality.

And then each test-taker will be required to /pull a quill from a live
goose/ on the way in.

And the geese will be raised by the faculty.

OTOH, perhaps a simple Faraday cage
([https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faraday_cage]) would do.

With appropriate /physical/ security, and frequent scanning inside for
WiFi, of course.

Note that the WiFi scanned for can include WiFi generated outside the
cage by the people doing the scanning.

I suspect that a full-blown SCIF would be overkill, but, if that's
what it takes ...
