That does not look like much padding for a soft landing.

Snow compresses real good.

I am not used to much snow. The deepest I have seen it here on the Gulf
Coast in Texas was eight inches in 2004. My family left New Jersey in
1963 when I was three so I don't remember it at all. And we did not get
much snow in Oklahoma where we lived from 1963 to 1971.

We turned the concrete stairs at the back of our house into a "ski jump"
for our sleds and coasters one winter in the 1960s. We also dug a tunnel
through the base. Mom & Dad were _not pleased_, but it was far enough
away from the house's foundation that they let us keep it up until the
coldsnap broke. Then we had to break it up and spread it over the back
lawn, which had some grass on it. The parts that made up the base paths
for our games of baseball, softball and Whiffle Ball had little living grass.

-9°F/-23°C at the nearest airport this a.m. We've had a snow drought this
winter, but plenty of rain. No snow in the upcoming week's forecast.

I'm outside of Dallas, so pretty much the same. Officially we get 1-2 inches
on average, but this translates to a 6-8 inch snowfall every 3-5 years.
We did get the perfect Texas snowfall some years back...it started snowing
late Saturday evening and by Sunday morning there was about 8 inches on
the ground. Snowballs were thrown and snowmen were made. By mid-afternoon
the temperature was near 70F and the only reminders of the snow were the
sadly decrepit snowmen. Freezing rain OTOH...ugh. We hates it.

In my part of New England, we don't get much lake effect snow, so having more
than two feet on the ground is pretty rare, though we have occasionally had that
overnight. The deepest I've encountered is 6-8 feet , in Sweden.

OTOH, last night it got down to -19F (-28C) at my house. Wind chill: -37f , -38c

I think that's the lowest temperature I've ever experienced outdoors.
