I wonder if Scott Adams has heard of Terry Bisson's "They're Made Out of
Meat"?

[https://dilbert.com/strip/2023-01-16] is on the same page as this
one.

Note the interesting thing about the strip titles: they all end with
"A". It is tempting to think that they actually end in "A.I." but the
software displaying them is too stupid to get past the first ".".

Is that a characteristic, by any chance, of Linux?

No, of Windows. Windows is the OS with the user interface that
hides file extensions (well, what it thinks are stanrdard file
extensions) so that crackers can send your colleages files called
"lottery_win.pdf.exe" and they only see the "lottery_win.pdf".
(Well, unless you forbid it to.)

With respect, shouldn't this be the first thing you do after getting
your machine with a spanking new Windows install?

I'm pretty sure Windows had this "feature" as early as 3.0 and it
seems they change the dialogue to this option (which for my money
should be the default) so there's a bit of hide and seek involved but
for at least the last 5-6 years that's the first thing (after looking
at Windows Explorer to verify that my drives are the size I expect
them to be and that nobody has been stupid enough to change my
partition sizes to "help" me)

Relevant SF stories:

Assimilating our culture, that's what they're doing! (if that's the
right story from the Draco Tavern).

The Hail Mary Project (well, a tiny little bit, towards the end)

War of the Worlds.
