I don't think I've ever heard a *good* HOA story.

I'm very glad I don't have one. I do worry about the local Historical
Society, which tells me my house is eligible for the National Register.

I had to deal with a number of them for subdivisions and such that my
father's company developed when I worked for him. And for all the
contempt you see heaped on the wealthy I would say that the more the
houses cost the easier the HOA's were to deal with. The "upper" middle
class ones ones were usually like dealing with a cross between the
Spanish Inquisition and a group of Queen Bee high school girls.

I remember a conversation at an adjacent table at the beach one time
to the effect of:

Generals and corporate execs who used to tell thousands
of people what to do retire to the coast and get elected
to the HOA where they put that same drive into mandating what
kind of flowers you can have in your window planter.

To be fair(I guess) having a good working relationship with the
developer does not mean they were necessarily any better to live under
the rule of. But with how unhinged most of the others were it just
seems like they would almost have to be better.

My main takeaway from the experience was just to make sure never to buy
a house that came with a HOA. Unless the only thing you care about is
resell value.
