"Trickster Noir (Pixie for Hire)" by Cedar Sanderson
https://www.amazon.com/Trickster-Noir-Pixie-Hire-2/dp/0615998852/

Book number two of a three book fantasy series. I read the well printed
and well bound POD (print on demand) trade paperback published by
Stonycroft Publishing in 2014. I am now reading the third book in the
series.

Bella accepted Lom's marriage proposal but can she keep Lom alive alive
after he was captured and tortured by the Low Fae Kingdom ? And then
the king of the High Fae Kingdom sends Bella out to kill the rest of the
hiker eating ogres around Mt. St. Helens. So Bella grabs her uncle, the
immortal Raven, and her Alaskan cousins to do battle with her magic and
a .600 caliber Nitro Express rifle.

Fairies, Pixies, Dragons, Ravens, Firebirds, Wood Elves, and Baba Yaga,
oh my ! This series just builds more and more very quickly.

The author has a website at:
http://www.cedarwrites.com/

My rating: 4.4 out of 5 stars
Amazon rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars (63 reviews)

! Just how big is Bella? The time travel guide group Rivers and Aiyar
wouldn't allow anybody lighter than 140 pounds if they had to use a .600
Nitro Express.

The author never says but implies that Bella is close to six foot tall.
In the Above (the human abode) Lom is 4 foot 6 inches. In the
Underhill, Lom is 6 foot six inches (magical being). The huge gun
actually belongs to Lom along with his .40 caliber grenade launcher,
things that he has accumulated in over 200 years of life spent mostly in
the Above as a bounty hunter.

Actually Bella gives the .600 caliber Nitro Express to her 300+ lb 7
foot tall cousin Dan. Dan nicknames it the Ogrebuster. Bella sticks to
magic mostly with the ogres: fireballs and trickery. But she does latch
on to Lom's .40 caliber grenade launcher.

BTW, in the Pixie Noir multiverse, mass is not consistent.

No such beast. However, this is almost certainly a reference to a 40 mm
grenade launcher.

I'm thinking you mean 40mm grenade launcher because .40 caliber is a
pistol round. I don't know about his, but the Army's M49/M203 grenade
launcher has little kick.

We "qualified" (shot a round or two to make sure we could figure out
how to do it) on them in the late 70s at Grafenwoehr. I don't recall
any particular kick.

No, the only problem is that these were left-over WWII shells. They
had a safety feature where they would not explode until they left the
launcher and rotated a certain number of times.

Unfortunately, Grafenwoehr featured dirt roads, some of them quite
rough and every so often one of these puppies would decide it had been
fired and start counting revolutions. Which meant it could go off
rather closer to the firer than expected. So the number of people at
the firing point was very restricted (trainee, observer, range
officer), with everyone else back behind a nice solid hill. Nothing
actually went wrong when we did it, but this did add a certain ...
frisson ... to the experience!

Oh yeah, Graf, fun times. Doing grenade training, three of us standing
well outside the danger zone, probably twice the distance, talking.
Buddy jerks his head, goes ow! and starts bleeding from a very small cut
on his forehead. You can never count on the specs.

I think you mean Viet Nam. The the M79 launcher and 40mm ammo didn't get
fielded until 60 or 61. And surprisingly, the M79 is still in use today
by spec ops team because it's effective range is twice that of the M203.
