Chinese people"...

No doubt you thought of this as a politically-correct non-racist remark
that has the additional virtue of being factual.

However, Chechens would be surprised to find themselves considered
to be Russians, and I daresay the same would be true of Tibetans
considered to be Chinese.

That is: China is an imperial ethnostate which happens to have conquered
and incorporated several foreign countries into itself, such as Tibet, Manchuria,
and Uighuristan (East Turkestan, Sinkiang/Xinjiang province).

Persons who are not ethnic Chinese are citizens of the People's Republic
of China - and, indeed, there are also indigenous people of Polynesian
origin who are citizens of the Republic of China (most commonly termed
Taiwan). So they are indeed Chinese _nationals _ without being *ethnically
Chinese*.

So, in my view, the Han are the Chinese, and all the non-Han peoples of
China, even those whose distribution, like that of the Yi, might make
an independent national homeland at some future date somewhat
impractical (unless one didn't particularly _care_ how many Han had to
be relocated to achieve that, which is certainly possible depending on the
circumstances of the downfall of the Communist regime centered in
Beijing), are merely non-Chinese people off of whom the Communist
regime should keep its grubby paws.
