Dude, you rock ! Of course, I have read all five books. "The Star
Beast" is one of my Top Ten (23 actually) books.

The Heinlein apologist, Hugo and Nebula award winning author Jo Walton
says this about "Friday" in a 2009 review, "The worst book I love:
Robert Heinlein’s Friday". She complains that there is no plot but to
me, the best plot is just life.

Completely agree. In fact, just reread Friday in the last month or two.

I think this is the first list of James' that I've read more that one or
two. I know it's the first where I've read them all.

I that I have read all five books is a first for me too. James must be
getting soft in his old age.

I think you may have overlooked the more subtle selection
criteria James used when choosing which Heinlein "Tough,
Rough and Rugged" stories to highlight.

Oh, I know. James is taunting us.

Every other post on usenet is a taunt. I ignore them.

No, James is not nearly as witty and sarcastic as he thinks he is. It is
sort of like watching a bear dance. Or a much less charismatic Don
Quixote fighting the figments of his imagination.

Taunting us with good SF! How dare he!

Can't he stay on topic with Hunter Biden and the inner workings of obsolete
computers?

"Fie", I say.

An excellent policy.

Personally I have no idea how witty and sarcastic James thinks he is.

My mind reader is on the fritz.

That is a fair comment. However, while I can't read minds either,
it is a reasonable assumption that James thinks his wit and sarcasm
are good enough to make his reviews worth reading.

Sometimes, perhaps, he goes a bit heavy on the sarcasm, thus injuring
the appeal of his wit, but I, for one, am not totally soured on the quality
of his writing merely because I occasionally disagree with his politics.

I think one should restrain oneself from letting one's objectivity be
overwhelmed by emotion in such a way.

Well he gets paid to write so it seems enough people like it to make it work...

I had noticed myself that the fate of Holly and Jeff is open to doubt, given the subsequent history on that universe. Luna City probably did not function during the time of the American theocracy, (not that RAH's American theocracy concept is terribly believable), but having grown up in Lunar gravity, returning to Earth or emigrating to Venus looks doubtful (in this universe, Venus is habitable, and in fact Lazarus Long is supposed to have spent most of the theocratic period on Venus). There are nation-states on Earth that are still more-or-less free during that period, but the gravity issue is a problem for them.

On the third hand, Mars is also marginally habitable, maybe Holly and Jeff managed to get to Mars and settle when it all fell apart.

_Friday_, IMHO, is a strange mix of RAH's best traits and some of his worst tropes. His exploration of the Shipstone and its implications, the portrayal of a balkanized North America, etc. were sfnal classic, and there's an interesting scene in which Friday is part of a discussion that includes a genetic engineer, who more-or-less repudiates some of the attitudes RAH's characters espoused in earlier works. OTOH, his unfortunate 'free love/incest fantasy' tropes were in play toward the end, too.
