Where are our flying cars? This is the question often asked, sometimes
facetiously, about how "the future" hasn't lived up to the expectations
set by its depiction in popular science fiction.

The following video must be described as off-topic.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HIjf_vEbbv8

Although I have no use for Donald Trump, the way in which Stephen
Colbert's absolute contempt for Donald Trump is on display in this
video is excessive; I apologize for having no better link at hand for the
relevant information.

Oh, wait. Maybe I'd have a better link if I bothered to use Google to
search for one. Here we are:

https://www.cnn.com/2023/03/03/politics/donald-trump-freedom-cities-flying-cars/index.html

So sensitive souls who still maintain some shred of respect or sympathy
for Donald Trump may click on this link instead. Or even just sensitive
souls like myself, who don't appreciate toilet jokes no matter who they're
directed at.

In any event, the _news_ item mentioned at the beginning of the video
is this: Donald Trump wants to build a city of the future, with help and
cooperation from the government, where flying cars will be the mode
of transportation, because it's important (as it was with high-definition
television) not to let the Japanese or others be the ones to take the
lead in this important technology that is emerging in the future.

Yeah, right. Trump's only goal is to claim his project is bigger
than the Saudi's.

Linear cities have been tried before. They're stupid.

IIRC, the Metaverse in Neal Stephenson's _Snow Crash_
is laid out that way? But, I think the book is not entirely
a serious one. The main character [citation needed]
is named Hiro Protagonist.

In William Gibson's _Virtual Light_, there's the alternate city
built on the San Francisco, Oakland Bay bridge. Hey, is the
end part of the film _Johnny Mnemonic_ set on a bridge?
Or something unusual.

Is Alastair Reynolds' _Chasm City_ linear shaped perforce?
Being built inside a chasm.

And I think the population of Egypt used to live along the Nile.
Where all the water was.

Contempt for the former president cannot be excessive. Not even if
Colbert wished on him flesh eating syphilis and nercotizing tracheal
gonorrhea.

While I would find it difficult to argue with that point of
view were the question cast in terms of what Donald Trump
deserves, it should have been clear from my post that I
was instead looking at the matter from the perspective of
what would be funny and entertaining for the viewers of
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

After all, a display of anger can be self-indulgent even if
that anger is righteous.

For an example of how one can be truly funny while being
resolutely non-political, I submit this, from The Tonight
Show:

Difficult or not, a number of people through the ages have indeed argued against unbridled anger, and these arguments may be relevant unless you are prepared to claim that Trump was so much worse than Nero, Tarquin, Herod etc.. to render arguments for temperance irrelevant. I quote names known to the Romans because in an attempt to find a vaguely SF-relevant philosopher I have settled on Marcus Aurelius, as mentioned at least in Babylon 5. A web search finds e.g. "In the same degree in which a man's mind is nearer to freedom from all passion, in the same degree also is it nearer to strength."
