Edna Mayne Hull published a series of six novellas from 1943 to 1946
in _Astounding_, about big business "operators" wheeling and dealing
in a future where colonization and industrialization often precede
effective government. Five of these were published as a lash-up novel
titled _Planets for Sale_.
The protagonist is Artur Blord. Artur would seem to be a version
of Arthur. Does it suggest any particular ethnicity? Is
Artur Blord possibly a humerous juxtaposition of different
ethnicities like Jose Peterson in _Peanuts_? At one point
Peppermint Patty mentions that she has been invited to
the Petersons for Tortillas and Swedish meatballs.

My thanks in advance for any replies.

"Artur" is in my experience usually associated with someone from
Eastern Europe or Germany (Artur Rubinstein, for example).

"Blord" sounds like a typical truncation of a long Eastern European
name as in Maugham's "The Alien Corn" where the family, long
resident in England takes the last name "Bland" (Somerset was
in one of his less subtle moods in that story).

Thank you for your reply. Is ''The Alien Corn" the one where the young
man is trying to learn to play the piano at a high level?

That's the one. Something of a theme of Maugham's, though Philip
Cary finds something else worth doing in medicine when he's told that
he is a good but not good enough artist.

I knew a parallel in real life. The almost-but-not-quite good enough
pianist in this case went on to a doctorate in chemistry, and became
a neurologist.

A number of Golden Age authors toyed with minor variations on
common 20th century names, apparently in an attempt to show how
names could change in the future. Kind of similar to the way Yohanan -
Johanan - Iohannes - Johann - John - Jan - Janko - Jean - Juan -
Gianni - Ivan - etc works.

I'm fairly certain I once read a novel about "Artur the Boar", which
was somebody's name for the "real" King Arthur (a very early Briton
who tried to hold things together after the Romans left).

But I can't find it online! Even when asking /only/ for "Artur"
instead of "Arthur", most of the hits are for "Arthur". And none are
for a novel (from, say 40-50 years ago) about him.

Whether "Artur the Boar" and "Artur Blord" are in any way related, of
course, I have no idea.

In the first part of _The Hollow Hills_, Merlin recalls[*] that
he had once predicted that Artos (the Boar) would emerge from
Cornwall to unite Britian. Perhaps that is the source of your
recollection.

I expect that what you say is true, but our friend "a45"
says that "Arthur" means "bear" in Celtic.

However, <https://www.behindthename.com> is not so sure,
and neither is <https://www.ancestry.co.uk/learn/facts>,
as there is "an obscure Roman family name" of Artorius.

I doubt it, since I don't remember reading it (I do, however, remember
reading Mallory in a library), although some references in and
reachable from [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hollow_Hills] are
consistent with late Roman/early post-Roman Britain. But "Artur the
Boar" was not the title, and I don't remember the title.

Then again, considering how long it has been, anything is possible.
