I have learned that in France, a series of pulp novels began in 1911, about a
hero who was part machine, and had night vision and other powers as a
result.
And that Black Coat Press is currently publishing translations into English of some of those stories.

No; I did not go into it in detail. I was somewhat puzzled by
reading that several installments in the original series, published prior
to 1945, had the Nyctalope battling the Nazis.

This would have made sense if the series was published and
written in Quebec, but IIRC, France was occupied by the Nazis
during most of World War II - at least certainly prior to D-Day.

Which was in 1944, and some of the stories referred to above
were dated 1943.

I have the feeling I must have drastically misunderstood something
in the article listing the books in the series, but I hadn't been interested
enough to dig deeper.
