Since mainstream fiction mostly bores me to death, I have little
opinion on the non-M novels, but _Espedair Street_ was simply
pleasant (and I was reminded of it again recently when I watched
Amazon's _Daisy Jones and the Six_).

My first Iain M. Banks novel was the standalone _Against a Dark
Background_ and I think that was a good choice. Now excuse me while
I fetch some vaginal secretions from a dragon for my assassination
plot...
